    I always take the approach if all else fails google....and this is what I did....there is still quite a bit out there on Squadron Leader John Woodburn GILLAN including I think other family members looking for information

    It appears that John served on HMS Eagle in 1934

    A fascinating thread!

    I’m a little puzzled, though; Indigo_Child states that it is written on the back of the photo that it is of her mother’s brother who died in Greece, yet the man has been positively identified via the newsreel that ross_mcneill found as John Woodburn Gillan, who according to his memorial (see Geograph – link supplied by geneius #11) was lost in the channel after an air battle in August 1941 and is buried in Dunkirk.

    I wonder if there’s just been a case of mistaken identity? Or it might help if we could see a picture of what’s written on the back of the photo?
