    Hi Carol
The electoral registers are not name indexed, so you will need an address first. The trade directories will help you to find an address, also any birth, marriage or death certificates.
According to Kelly's 1940 trade directory for Liverpool:
McMenemy jas. coal mer., 165 Whitehedge Road, [Liverpool]19 Garston. It is just off the junction with Brodie Avenue. My husband's granny used to live over one of the shops in Whitehedge Road.

Re; electoral rolls for Liverpool1920 up to1981
Hi Carol, I was at school with a Jimmy McMenamy, he was born in1924 I think .Beaufort St.,Council School, Liverpool8.The family lived in a street which backed on to the school. Access to the street was down PARK ST., off the main road,MILL ST., it was one or two streets below Beaufort St., I know there were younger siblings. These details are derived from just one game of footy when we were about 10 yrs olds. Best of luck. DINGLE
