The main set of records are known as 'service records' the vast majority of which were destroyed in 1940 in a bombing raid on the Arnside repository.

I have heard plenty of figures but the most reliable seems to be around 70% lost.
There are notable exceptions as the guards regiments documents were stored elsewhere so most of these survived.

It might be a simple answer that the main records were amongst this lot?

This site Here has a list of common acronyms used by the military in WW1.

RFC may apply to the Royal Flying Corps and perhaps that is when he was awarded the Medal.

    Default Arnside Street fire, 1940

Have just come across this: https://sprhistory.co.uk/index.php/ww...ficers-records. Admittedly, sappers, admittedly officers, but it gives clues as to what is/isn't available.

    Hi

RFC/10C PAGE 741 If you have the correct Medal Index Card, it refers to the Medal Roll which is RFC/10c page 741. This is the reference you will need to look up the medal roll at National Archives (it is not online) - https://discovery.nationalarchives.go...s?uri=C4438147
See also here for explanation - https://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/campaignmedals.html
    regards

    Robert
