Question Joseph Hamlett PLY/ 660/S from Newton Heath.

I am searching for more information about a great uncle. Joseph Hamlett from Newton Heath Manchester. His number was PLY/660/S I think he was in the navy. he was born in 1901. My mum rarely shared much information about her family.

I found his record via this site but it is vague as to why he was discharged disabled and the extent of his disability. He died in 1947 aged 55 in the Lytham local Hospital. He managed to work as a hotel manager of the St Annes Hotel in Lytham. He was married to a M M Hamlett who also lived in the hotel. I wonder if this town offered some physical support for war veterans as I read that this hotel offered accomodation for people with disabilities..

I look forward to any information about Joseph Hamlett or where I could find more.
    Thank you

    Welcome to Brit-Gen Dot

Did you know Joseph was in the navy before you started looking for his service record?

I ask because there are a few Joseph or J Hamlett service records. There is a medal card on ancestry for a Joseph Hamlett who was in the Lancashire Fusiliers, regiment number 7005. I can't see a pension or service record for this man but that is not surprising as 60%+ of WW1 records were destroyed by bombing in WW11.

Thank you geneius for you search. what a great site. Would they have received badges and medals on leaving service ? For all military personel discharged or other moving into civvy street after such a war must have been difficult. It would have been good to hear about his past from my mum as to why I will never know. smallham47

Thanks Christina along with the other threads and posts I have now added some extra info. What a great site and thinking that there are so many people out there with time to do so for others. I felt that because of his date of birth 1901 and the period he lived that he would have had no option but to go in the services.

he served in the royal marines, these records are in a different place to naval seamen. Short servive menans he signed up for 7 years, so maybe 2 years service then 5 years in the reserves.

I think the RM records are online but cant remember.

Hello Geneius Also thanks for this where did you get it from? I guess Joseph got some work after the services he may well have become a shipping agent? With his naval experience the work would be familiar. Commerce with these ports post war apparantly boomed. From wikipedia the shipping lines eventually merged into Elder Dempster lines Ltd. So at 34 after working with passengers he may then have became a hotel manager. So helpful with that piece of jigsaw. Dot
