For some time now original images of Cape Civil Deaths from 1895 have been available to browse through on Family Search, but this is not much help if you don't have a year of death or a place of death. Volunteers on various mailing lists have gradually been adding indexes to groups of photographs, and these have now been placed on the 1820 settlers website, whether or not the person concerned had 1820 settler ancestry.
Click on Cape Civil Death Indices on the left hand side, then on the letter of the surname of your choice. This will lead you to a list of people whose death certificate has been indexed, along with the year, place of death and image number, enabling you to find the original easily on Family Search. The project is ongoing, so keep checking back if the person you want is not listed, bearing in mind that civil death certificates only started in 1895 in the Cape.

Hi, Sue. Thanks for pointing out this index on 1820settlers.com
Do you know if any groups have been transcribing the Civil Death records for the Western Cape area, especially Cape Town?

I can't say for certain, but most of those who have been indexing have posted their efforts on a specific Rootsweb mailing list at
https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/i...-INDEXERS.html
so you could try putting in a search for your name.
Otherwise you can pick a likely year and browse through the original images hereSue Mackay
