    What was your evidence for the statement in your original post that he was a coal miner in Wakefield in 1912? He might have worked at a coal mine in a non-mining capacity, and that would be consistent with his being a labourer in 1924, and something else later - though again, I'm wondering what your evidence is. Not that that has any direct bearing on your original question!

    I found his WW1 record on Ancestry and this gave his occupation specifically as coal miner when he enlisted. He was discharged after a few weeks on health grounds and it recorded coal miner again on the page where it was ending his service.
