Default Anti German feeling in UK pre 1914 riots

I am seeking information on my grandfather who was German and understand caught up in the anti German riots in the UK
just before the First World War. I understand my grandfather died in these riots where would I find confirmation of this?

    Thank you

    HI

Have you applied for his death certificate, it should state cause of death on that?

    regards

Have a look at FreeBMD. It's an index, but will tell you where he died (if it was in England or Wales), and when. You'll need that information to get his death certificate.
When you know where and when, it might also be worth looking at old newspapers.
If you post what information you have, our experts might be able to help, as well.

There is an Anglo-German Society and a number of the members of that society have stories about the treatment of their ancestors, cicilysmith

Dear Lesley thank you for your quick response to my enquiry.
According to a letter written by his daughter, Otto Roenisch died in the anti german riots on his way back to Germany in 1914. Difficult to know whether he was in England or in Germany at the time of his death.

There were riots in many if not most English towns then. The place of death will control where the death cert was issued. There shouldn't be too many of that name....

I ran a search on FreeBMD for deaths of anyone called Otto R* between 1914-1918, and there's nothing that is even remotely like his surname.... I wonder whether he died of injuries later, in Germany as you suggest. Alternatively, there were also riots in mainland Europe. Do you know where he would have been heading for?

The 1911 census has one but this is the only record I have found so far using this spelling. I bet there are a lot of variations of spellings.
    17 Campbell Road Twickenham
    Edwin G C Rawley 44 Racing clerk
    Ada G 40 wife
    Lawrence G 19 son
    Grace A 10 dau

Otto P Roenisch 23 son in law, gentleman's hairdresser resident of Germany
    Mabel I Roenisch 23 daughter
    Mabel G Roenisch 1 granddaughter

I came across this marriage earlier but didn't know who it was then:

Mabel G Roenisch to Walter T Morris Dec Q 1933 Brentford, Middlesex.

(Twickenham to Brentford is only about 3 miles)

christanel, if the daughter who wrote the letter was named Mabel then you've cracked it!

    Hi All
there are two marriages for a Mabel in Brentford. One with the middle initial G and the other with middle initials I M. But this isn't helping me find Otto

From memory I did find one on ancestry yesterday in the records for soldiers who fought for Germany, but I can't remember if the surname spelling was a variation of the one we have.
