Default ALFRED MOSES 1819-1910-LONDON AND VIRGINIA

This new thread links to previous posts relating to my Hart UK and US lines particularly the lines descending from Benjamin Hart of London and his daughter Rosa Hart who married Henry Moses and of Benjamin's son Michael Hart.
The focus of this thread is to provide new data on Alfred Moses 1819-1910 son of Henry Moses and Rosa Hart and specifically data relating to Alfred's wife and children. The American Jewish First Families online genealogies show the relationship between the Davis and the Hart families in the US. Michael Hart had married Francis Davis daughter of David Davis and Esther Mordecai. In turn, Alfred Moses son of Henry Moses and Rosa Hart had married Catherine ( Kate) Davis daughter of George Davis and Esther Barnet. George was the son of David Davis and Esther Mordecai. Alfred was a nephew to Michael Hart and was an executor of his will- see snippets on Google Books which refer to the Reports of Cases in the Supreme Court of Appeals Virginia.. " In 1861, Alfred Moses a nephew of the testator ..Michael Hart.. had been appointed his executor." Further records identified the two men trading as Hart and Moses -clothing in 1850 in Lynchburg Virginia.
Alfred Moses had left London circa 1830/31 as the statements from his two sons indicate on passport declarations.
On Find a Grave online website there are photographs of the tombstone for Alfred, his wife; his son Harry and his daughter Isoline. The photograph shows a large obelisk with four faces each face containing inscriptions for the various individuals.
    The inscriptions include:
My beloved husband Rabbi David Klein A faithful servant of the Lord born Feb 11 1868 died Jan 28 1926. Below the inscription there is- Isoline Moses Klein wife of Rabbi David Klein born Feb 22 1860 died Oct 26 1927. Another face of the monument has- Harry M Moses born July 8 1858 died July 19,1936. Alfred Moses born London England Nov 10 1819 died August 1 1910 and In Memory of a Mother in Israel Kate Consort of Alfred Moses born in Lynchburg Feb 19 1832 died in Richmond Nov 27,1885.
I will post data on Walter D Moses aka Walter M DAVIS and US Census returns for the individuals.

Default WALTER D MOSES AKA WALTER M DAVIS

This posts provides data on Walter D Moses aka Walter M DAVIS son of Alfred Moses and Catherine ( Kate) Davis. in #1 of this thread I provided information on the tombstone inscriptions in the Hebrew Cemetery Richmond City Virginia USA for Alfred, Kate, Harry and isoline and her husband David Klein.
I have yet to discover where Walter is buried or why he adopted the surname DAVIS. However, he appears in several US City Directories records including Walter D Moses and W D M and Co New York City and Walter D Moses and Louis J Heindl Piano and organs 103 e Broad 1910 Directory. There are also photographs online of his shop with the name of the company up to 1980s in Richmond Virginia.
The issue of his change of surname from Moses to Davis appears in his Passport Application Sept 1919 in which he gave his name as Walter M DAVIS b Richmond Virginia with wife Lizzie E Davis . He stated on the application that he was born Richmond Virginia 25 April 1862 and his father was Alfred MOSES b London England not living who had emigrated from England on or about 1831 and resided from 1831-1911 at Richmond Virginia. He also stated that he was a retired merchant and had resided out of the US from 1911-1914 and from 1908 travelling in France, Switzerland and Italy to sell pianos and player pianos. There are passport photographs for Walter and his wife- he was described as 59; 5 feet 10 inches;forehead medium;eyes brown;nose regular;mouth small;hair black some grey;complexion fair; face rather oval.
Interestingly there was attached to the passport the Declaration by Harry M MOSES that he resided at 301 West 107th St New York and was the brother of Walter M Davis who was born in the the state of Virginia April 25 1862. Harry stated that he himself was born Richmond on 3 July 1858. Their father was Alfred Moses who had emigrated from England in 1831 and resided in Richmond for 80 years from 1831-1911.
In 1921 Walter and his wife Lizzie E Davis born Boston Massachusetts applied for another passport but this time Walter stated that his father was called Alfred Davis b London England emigrated to US 1830 and lived in Virginia until 1910. The photographs and descriptions for Walter all match those in the 1919 passport. Why Walter called himself Davis is unknown at present. The American Jewish First Families genealogy give Arbuckle as the surname for Walter's wife but there is no first name or details.
A later New York Passenger List show Walter M Davis 67 b Richmond Virginia 26 April 1862 with wife Lizzie E Davis 62 b Boston Mass 27 May 1867- Port of Departure Tilbury England arrival New York 21 Oct 1829 on the " Minnewaska".
