    Default Trafalgar Cemetery, Gibraltar

I was in Gibraltar last week and photographed the list of names on the board at the entrance to the Trafalgar Cemetery. The photo includes the cemetery plan as well, but unfortunately the plot numbers are too small to read, though the cemetery is not large. Formerly known as the South Ditch Cemetery, it is just to the south of the old city walls, near the base of the modern cable car to the top of the Rock. Although named for the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, only two victims of the battle are buried there, the rest having been buried at sea. The remainder of the interments are mostly of those killed in other sea battles or casualties of the yellow fever epidemics that swept Gibraltar between 1804 and 1814. In addition, tombstones were transferred to the Trafalgar Cemetery from St.Jago’s Cemetery and Alameda Gardens. I assume that the blanks refer to stones that are no longer legible.

Further details of some of those buried here can be found on the Malta Family History site here

A transcription of the names on the board follows.

The photo of the board and plan doesn't come out well here, but I can e-mail it to anyone if they send me a PM with their address.

    Hi

Many thanks for the Rudyerd entry. My Rudyerd ancestor was the Major at Gibraltar, for 28 years. He died in Kent 1793. His wife also died in England. I believe his sons one of which is my ancestor were born there. I would be interested to know who was buried in Gibraltar in 1813

    Thanks again

Thank you Martin for the reminder. I forgot Charles William Rudyerd went to Gibraltar too. He was my 3 x great grandmother's brother. I should have remembered. It's been a while since I looked at my files
