Tonight, doing a fish pie for dinner, I was preparing the 'Smoked South African Cod' and got to wondering. Started of with ' What is South African Cod?' and then got to thinking about how it was such a pale imitation (literally and figuratively) of the Smoked Haddock that Grandma used to cook. In fact, about the only things she was good at was Haddock with White Sauce and Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding. I somehow remember that Grandma's haddock used to arrive in wonderful boxes, but cannot recall whether they came from England like her wonderful cheeses.
So, can one still find the real smoked haddock of old? Heavily smoked, quite leathery before cooking, firm flaky flesh. And if not, why not? (Answer yes or no.)

Still quite widely available over here - if you don't have a decent fishmonger nearby, you can, like most things, even order it online these days.
I will probably upset the Scots saying this, they are rather proud of their smoked haddock, especially Arbroath Smokies, but I reckon the oak-smoked ones that I've had as part of my fish order from a company in Cornwall are the best I've tasted.

They were probably Arbroath Smokies - still produced and available online! Just Google for a supplier. My father grew up near Arbroath & we used to buy them straight from the smokehouse. I prefer them cold. Delicious

I get mine from Morrison's. I steam a fillet in milk in the microwave and add a poched egg - delicious. When I had cats they loved the leftover fish-flavoured milk.

Hi Geoff
You have just inspired my choice for lunch today - Cullen Skink - cream of smoked haddock soup.

Our 'fishmongers' are mostly fresh fish retailers. And the 'fresh' bit is sometimes a little on the untruthful side.

Who is Barbie, and why do people throw fish at her?
Edit:
Sorry - you said *on* not *at*. Ok - that gives me a clue to work on, I guess she's lying down on a beach somewhere.
