    Default LOUIS NORTON 1798-1853-SOLICITOR

This new thread examines the relationship between Louis Norton 1798-1853 solicitor who had a second marriage to Elizabeth Levy (also her second marriage) in 1850. These Norton/Levy lines relate to the Levy/Jacobs who appear in the Jacobs family history data base as part of the Jacobs/Litzen/Letson glass dealers and manufacturers descended from David Jacobs/Letson/Litzen from Germany.
My particular interest in examining the Norton aka Norden line was because of the original trade of Aaron Norton aka Norden father of Louis who was originally an apprenticed glass cutter. I am also aware that the Norton/Norden lines appear in Cemetery and Synagogue Scribes sites as well as in a family history data base with links to South Africa.
As an initial start here is data on the second marriage of Louis Norton on Synagogue Scribes GSMa 101/33 -Louis Norton Hebrew name Yehuda (Priv Member) father's Hebrew name Aharon married Elizabeth Levy (Ryna) father's Hebrew name Mikal 17 Feb 1850 . Further data on Louis and Elizabeth appears on Cemetery Scribes -Louis Norton ID 16089; Elizabeth ID 11806.
The death of Louis Norton appeared in The Morning Chronicle - Death on the 4th inst at his residence 10 St.Martin's Court Leicester Square Mr Louis Norton formerly of Jewin St City, solicitor aged 55. The Morning Chronicle Thurs Dec 8, 1853.
The UK Articles of Clerkship show Louis Norton 1813 father Aaron NORTON of New St Covent Garden Middx - Auctioneer.
Aaron NORDEN ( it is clear from records that the surname Norton and Norden were originally interchangeable) married ELIZABETH JACOBS GSM 048/6- 6 May 1799 - Aaron's father's Hebrew name Pinchas; Elizabeth's father Hebrew name Yehuda.
The Apprentice records show- Tuesday April 29,1794 Fleet Lane London- Apprentice: AARON NORDEN - glass engraver to Messrs Phillips and Joseph Masters. Trade records further show Aaron NORTON glass cutter 19 Denmark Court 1802 and later A Norton glass warehouse Hart St Covent Garden and Aaron Norton auctioneer 34 Hart St Covent Garden. The address of 34 Hart St is important because it links to the Probate of Mary JACOBS mother of Elizabeth- see Synagogue Scribes Will extracts NA 997 MARY JACOBS-1812 of 22-34 Hart St St Paul's Covent Garden - bequests to AARON NORTON of Charles St St Mary le Strand son in law and LOUIS AARON NORTON grandson.
Aaron Norton aka Norden was both a glass engraver/dealer and an auctioneer. He appears in the Apprenticeship records as a master- Friday 31 May 1805 Aaron NORTON St. Ann Westminster Middx glass cutter- Apprentice Jos Lyons.

Given the Jacobs trade as glass cutters; dealers and manufacturers I have begun to speculate whether or not there are other unknown Jacobs who link to the Mary Jacobs.
Further data on Louis Norton to follow.

    Default MARK JACOB NORDON 1799-1892

This post provides data on a further relationship between the Nordon/Norden and the Jacobs/Levy lines. This data has yet to be added to the updates on the Jacobs family history website. Here is a brief sketch of the relationships:
Solomon JACOBS 1832-1907 son of Lewis Jacobs and Milcah Levy married Esther NORDON daughter of Mark Jacob Nordon in 1855 - Marriages Dec qtr 1855 Strand 1b 609. Cemetery Scribes have a record for Mark Jacob Nordon- he married 1 Jane ARROBUS 1799-1858 and 2 Ellen HYMEN 1801-1897. Mark Jacob Nordon descends from Jacob Norden 1756-1839 and Catherine JACOBS b Joseph 1768-1838.
There are trade records for a Jacob Norden - glass and china dealer 1 Blizard Place Fulham Pigot 1836 and fancy glass cutter 4 White Lion St Chelsea 1836 and a Manasseh Norden b 1819 who married Isabella Barnett in 1844- the father of Manasseh was Joseph Norden glass cutter.
Further research is required but the data indicates Norden/Norton linked to Jacobs via marriage and the glass trade.

    Default ABRAHAM AND ABIGAIL NORDEN

This post provides very brief information ( initially) on Abraham and Abigail Norden descended from Yehuda Norden father of Pinchas Norden who in turn was father of Aaron Norden married to Elizabeth Jacobs. My knowledge of the line has been gleaned from reading the various posts on the Norden/Norton families on various family history sites and the main website which describes the settlement of Abraham Norden 1758-1840 line in South Africa. He and his wife Abigail ( Adel) did not settle in South Africa and he died in King Street Hammersmith.
There are Sun Fire Records for Abraham Norton which show him at 62 Upper East Smithfield 24 April 1793 and later at 70 Upper Smithfield 28 Dec 1808 in the trade of a slop seller. The family history site on Abraham showed his move away from the 70 Upper Smithfield address and his occupation as a slop seller by 1823. The reason for his move can be read in the newspaper accounts of the time- The Examiner Sunday 1 Sept 1822 which briefly described the fire which broke out at 70 Upper Smithfield occupied by Mr Norden slop seller. His house plus the adjoining house no 69 were both destroyed. I have yet to check the National Archives Sun Fire Records to confirm whether or not Abraham Norden still had insurance on his house when the fire broke out.

    Default LEAH PASS- LEWIS NORDEN

This post is a slight aside to the main thread on Lewis Norton solicitor but his line also relates to that of Abraham Norden/Norton because Abraham and Pinchas Norden were brothers. This post might also help fill in missing gaps regarding the origins of Leah Pass who married Louis Norden one of the sons of Abraham Norden who died in Hammersmith in 1840. The Jewish Victorian.Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers 1871-80 transcribed and edited by Doreen Berger, 1994 Pub Robert Boyd has an entry for the marriage of Leah Pass to Louis Norden ( he had settled in South Africa and had been previously married)- Marriage 12.12.1870 at Queen's Town South Africa Leah only daughter of the late Jael and Daniel PASS of Barbados, West Indies to Lewis NORDEN of Bethulie, Orange Free State. It is not my intention to provide significant data on the Pass lines but further data can be seen on the website headed " PINHERIO BIOGRAPHIES". This site provides details on the Pinherio families who settled in the West Indies including birth, marriage and death details. These details include information on Daniel Pass and his two marriages plus his children. His second marriage was to Jael PINHEIRIO and these are the parents of Leah Pass. Daniel died in 1833 and Jael in 1848.

    Default Phoebe LEMON

    Quick comment:

Rosetta Solomon H M 38 Ornamental Furniture Dealer b St Martin; Alexander son 5 b Somerset Bath; Alice dau 5 b Somerset Bath; Elizabeth dau 2 b Somerset Bath; ELIZABETH NORTON mother widow 62 annuitant b Houndsditch; Guldah LEVY Aunt w 62 assistant in shop St James; Phoebe LEMON niece visitor 10 b Finsbury

The census record does not say "LEMON" - it says "Lemoi" - and it is entirely likely that this person is Phoebe Levoi - and the census taker was hard of hearing

Elizabeth Norton (was Levy) - mother of Rosetta Solomon (was Levy) - sister-in-law of Guldah Levy (sister of Joseph). Phoebe Levy Levoi daughter of Abraham Levy Levoi and Hannah Levy - daughter of Elizabeth.

    Hallo Phillip

I came across this old thread of yours when trying to help someone establish a link to John NORTON and his wife Sarah NORDEN, daughter of Abraham, who emigrated to the Cape. I have no personal connection with the NORTON/NORDEN families but for some years I have been doing research on the 1820 settlers, and have transcribed all the correspondence of those who applied to go on the scheme, including letters from John NORTON (who did go) and Abraham NORDEN (who didn't, although his son Benjamin was listed with WILLSON's Party of settlers). Later letters from Benjamin and Joshua have also been transcribed.

I have been attempting to add Extra Information pages on the settlers with pre 1820 information gleaned from primary sources, as there is so much conflicting information on South African sites about this family. If you can point me to any hard facts about the birth of Abraham's children I will be grateful.

ETA: I have now found this site which seems well researched so many of my questions have been answered!

    Hi Sue
I have not researched the Abraham Norden lines in any detail but am aware of numbers of Ancestry.Com family trees which contain data on the children of Abraham. How accurate this data is would require cross checking with wills, newspaper articles and other sources. As an example, Benjamin Norden who died in 1875 is recorded in The Jewish Victorian. Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers 1871-80 transcribed and recorded by Doreen Berger, 1999 Publisher Robert Boyd- Benjamin's wife Abigail died 6.2.1874 at 3 Victoria Parade Ramsgate aged 71 formerly of Cape Hope. Benjamin died 14.5.1875 at the same address- Berger also recorded Benjamin Alexander as the son in law of Benjamin and Louisa as Benjamin's daughter.
Do you want data on these Norden lines?
    Phillip
