Default Mrs Gerald SPRING-RICE, Penrith, 1922

Filed in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363):

A handwritten letter from the widow (Mary C? Meryl?) of Gerald SPRING-RICE (whose brother wrote the poem that became the hymn "I Vow To Thee My Country).

The letter is to the War Office, dated December 1922, explaining that she had visited the cemetery in France where her husband is buried. She had taken a photo of the graves of 5 men of the same battalion (Lonsdale, Border Regt), and is asking whether she could be supplied with their families' addresses in order to send them a copy.

    What a generous lady!

The 5 men are COPELAND, STORDY, THOMPSON, ALLISON & LITTLE. All killed 1916.

Apart from being a wonderful example of her generosity, this may also be useful as a handwriting/signature sample.

    Anc****y, COP, page 17664

Also - page 17666 - the War Office's list of the addresses and Mrs Spring-Rice's reply.
