    Default ABRAHAM ALBERT NATHAN 1855-1920

This post fills in missing data on Abraham Albert Nathan aka Albert Warde Newton aka Arthur Newlands 1855-1920 son of Lawrence Isaac Nathan c 1802-1866 .and Julia Abrahams 1814-1891. Abraham relates to the Levy/Jacobs/Lewis/Nathan and others who have featured in numerous posts regarding Edward Lawrence Levy; Henry Levy Lewis and the Jacobs glass and china dealers amongs others. Robert Ward in his book Wealth and Noteriety the extraordinary families of William Levy and Charles Lewis of London, April 2013 self publishing lulu and co refers to Abraham with his various alias settling in Melbourne where he appears in the 1903 Australian Electoral Rolls. He was using the alias Albert Warde Newton and prior to moving to Melbourne he had been in Sydney with his wife and family. Robert noted in his section on Abraham that he had left Australia in 1906 and returned to England but no one in the later families knew the reason why. The Record in the New South Wales Police Gazette for 18 April 1906 and 23 May 1906 gives a reason why Abraham aka Albert left Australia: "A warrant has been issued by the Melbourne Bench for the arrest of Albert Ward Newton charged with uttering a forged cheque for £67 on the Bank of Melbourne on the 6th ins. He is 45 years of age; 5'7-8 " high;medium build; dark complexion;hair; whiskers; moustache; Jewish appearance. Commission agent. Supposed to have gone or going to Sydney." The 23 May 1906 NSW Police Gazette reported- "seen in Pitt Street Sydney about a fortnight ago -Albert Ward Newton".

These reports suggest that in order to escape arrest and possible imprisonment Albert quickly left Australia. In the 1911 British Census he appaers as Arthur Newlands with his wife Florence and children in Richmond Surrey and died in 1920 in the Paddington area.
