    Question Jeremiah Madden of Coleford?

Hi, Could anyone help me trace Jeremiah Madden? On the 1871, 81, and 91 census he was said to have been born in Coleford, Gloucester 1852/4. I have spent a small fortune trying to find the registration of his birth. He turns up later in Abergavenny, married to Mary Schimpf (daughter of German born parents). I can find no record of him before he was in prison in Portland Dorset in 1871. I want to find his parents so that I can go further back. I suspect the family came from Ireland originally.

It might well be worth searching the 1861 census. Coleford is a strange one though, it appears in the census for the Monmouthshire Registration Districts (not Gloucestershire)

    RG9/3980 to RG9/3983

Sorry I don't have a copy of it here at home, but one of our Monmouthshire friends here on the forums will have a copy of the Archive CD Books 1861 Monmouthshire census CDs, and those four pieces won't be too hard to search though. The chances of the family showing up there will be fairly high.

    Regards
    Rod

ps. I just copied this thread to also appear on the Monmouthshire forum
