Today is St Piran's day, the patron saint of Cornwall.

Legend has it that when he came to Cornwall, he brought with him a bottle of Irish whiskey, and finished it off one night with a hermit friend. The next day, he lit a fire to demonstrate the art of distilling. This was done on a bed of black stones and, when they heated up, a silver liquid ran out - more precious than even whiskey.

St Piran had launched the Cornish tin-mining industry!

Thanks Sue - I was about to go out and forgot that my two posts would not stay adjacent - it makes more sense now!
