You can request a copy of history service record . The contact address is on this site under RAF records as the address is RAF Cranwell. Sorry I can't give you the link as not on my PC.

Hello Graham,
Well I see Forces War Records have some information, though you probably know this already.
First Name: Harold
Initials: H
Surname: Holmes
DOB: Circa 1915
Age: 29
Nationality: British
Date of Death: 11/12/1944
Incident Date: 11/12/1944
Information: SON OF MR. AND MRS. G. W. HOLMES, OF LINCOLN.
Rank: Warrant Officer
Service Number: 1356402
Medals awarded: War Medal 1939-45, 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star.
Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Squadron: 228 Squadron
Commemorated: Runnymede Memorial
From further searching on the net I found these details about the Sunderland Aircraft that he was flying: on the 11th December 1944 Sunderland Aircraft ML782 from 228 Sqd suffered engine failure and came down in Plymouth Sound and sank near East submarine boom with W/O Holmes and F/lt J.G Trull killed.
Later when a salvage team was called in to raise the Sunderland there was a huge explosion from what was thought to be a depth charge. This killed seven civilians and two airmen.
See link: https://www.promare.co.uk/ships/Wreck...and_ML782.html
Also you will find reference and pictures in the book 'The Sunderland : Flying Boat Queen, Vol 3 by John Evans' See: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=H...0ML782&f=false
If you haven't already then please obtain his service record from this link: https://www.veterans-uk.info/service_...e_records.html
Also looks like you could read this link as someone else is appealing for information: https://www.larnetimes.co.uk/news/loc...iver-1-1702054
Hope this helps a little, though I see you have been on the RAFCommands forum and they have given some super information.

Big thank you for your help. Regarding the medals, Harold recieved the Atlantic Star not the Aircrew Europe Star ! unfortunately I can't seem to access the links to John Evans book and the Larne Times article.Very frustrating!!! Is there another person asking for information about Harold?
Thanks again
Graham.
