Default Francis King, his wife and daughters to U.S.A

Francis King was born in St. Hilary, Cornwall, about 1832. He married Eliza Mollard just before the 1861 census. He was a Miner. Between the years 1861-1866 they had 3 daughters - Eliza, Caroline and Ann. Their last child was born 4 March 1866 and baptised as Anne on 26 March 1866. The residence for the family was Higher Downs, St. Hilary.

The 1871 census has Eliza and the 3 girls living with her mother - Susanna - a widow. No Francis.

The 1880 census has them living in Sherman, Keweena, Michigan. He is a Miner. With them now is a 2month old son, Francis. This points to Francis sr. having left England sometime after 1866 and Eliza joining them possibly 1878-1879.

I can't find them on passenger lists going out. Can anyone help?

have you found any of them on later Censuses? Francis junior is listed as a Boarder on the 1900 Census for Houghton township, Keweena, Mich. His occupation is Machinist ?.
The writing is very scratchy BUT it appears as though he is living with sister Caroline and her family.
Head of household is John ***tshill born England March 1864 occupation - Miner. Year of immigration 1873
Caroline born England June 1864. Year of immigration1878
    Eva born Nov 1888
    Ethel born Jan 1890
    Reginald born July 1892
    **** (son) born Sept 1894
    Bertha born Feb 1898
    baby (dau) born April 1900

Since I couldn't find Francis sr. or Eliza in 1900, I thought they may have gone back to England.

Your finding of jr. with his married sister [date of emigration 1878] looks very promising. We now kow that in all probability, Eliza and the girls came in 1878.

unfortunately I don't have access to the 1890 Census but the immigration year of 1878 fits perfectly with Francis junior's birth. It's a pity that the 1880 doesn't give as much information.

Colin, here's a census for 1884, it's from the same site as the death cert above. Have a wander around the site yourself. It's a fantastic free database. I wish Maryland had a similar site.

And neither do most people as only fragments are in existence. This makes it a bit harder!!!

Eliza did have a brother, John, born 3rd q. 1841 so this is quite possible. I hadn't even started to look into him as I currently have 17 John Mollard's in my tree.
