John Hayes died in Whitby union workhouse in 1884.
What exactly does the death certificate say?

Can anybody help as to why he was in
    Probably because he was dying.

You'll have to ask North Yorkshire Record Office but hardly any Whitby workhouse records have survived.

According to the Workhouse web site, it became St Hilda's Hospital when the NHS was created. There is no entry in the Hospital Records Database. Again, I would advise asking North Yorkshire Record Office.
