I joined Brit-Gen a while back, but have not yet introduced myself. I've been researching my family history for about three years now. Although I live in South Africa, I have mostly British ancestry on both maternal and paternal sides.
My grandfather, Albert Howells left London after his mother's death in 1920 and never returned to England. I have had to start from scratch with research as he didn't talk much about his past. We didn't even know his parents' names! My major brickwall (confirmed by distant family that I have met online, is one William Thomas Goss, my gg-grandfather ... we're starting to believe that he doesn't want to be found!) I'll post the little I've found out about him on the Brickwall page.
My father's surname is Hawes and with the help of his cousins I have found the Hawes family living in Bethnal Green in the late 1800s. My great-grandfather, Harry Hawes came to South Africa in 1899 to fight in the Anglo-Boer War. He led a very interesting life, including living in the very remote area of (then) South West Africa (now Namibia).
I spend as much time as I can researching online and was lucky enough to visit the UK in 2011 to further my research. Highlight was visiting TNA at Kew!

Hope that I'll be able to break down a brickwall or two with help from Brit-Gen members.
