You have probably discovered that Googling 'Wellfoot' brings up a page of websites mainly for subscriber sites dealing with Wellfoot name. Ancestry seemed to have the biggest variety.:

Found a 1747 publication that included (extract only)-

The Highland Officer's way of exercising the men
    "Tauk heed, Sawney
Join your spoon hand to your muckle gun, Sir.
Haud her before your face, Sir.
Your Cogue hand to your muckle gun, Sir.
Bring her down to your knee, Sir.
Pu' back the lug o' her, Sir.
Present at the gelly Welfoots, Sir.
    Fire, Sir"

Also found an 1811 mention of repairs to ".... the Marnoch Road, from Banff to Welfoot, near Auchingoul"

    Can someone explain "gelly" pl?

I've found records back to the 17th Century in County Durham followed closely by ones in Yorkshire. They appear to have kept moving south. They also seem to use both spellings
