This is a possible match for Charles' death:
Deaths Jun 1938
Luff Charles J 80 Battersea 1d 415
Unfortunately if it is him, it doesn't explain where he was between 1871 and 1938.

There is a Charles Luff living in Manhattan, New York in 1900. He is living with his wife of 23 years, Bridget who was born in Ireland.
Year: 1900; Census Place: Manhattan, New York, New York; Roll: 1118; Page: 6A; Enumeration District: 829
The possible problem is that Charles gives his birth date at June 1850.
However, it could explain where Charles went as he may have travelled to Ireland.

there is a possable link to ireland but can not find much of a connection, the ship the Janet leaving from westport ireland to austraila. Luff is a not common name but Charles Luff is the most common of them all.
