I'm running Windows 7 and using FTM2005 and it works fine. Have thought of upgrading to a newer version but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

When I got my new laptop in March I used the USB memory stick procedure and it all went smoothly. My family file size is 245MB (due to the amount of note's, Pictures and Censuses I have in it) All you have to remember it to copy it from the memory stick to your new computer. FTM will not load from a memory stick.

Just to take on what Andy has said a stage further find in Windows Explorer on your old machine the Family Tree Maker file this will be what ever you called your tree and a have a dot ending .FTW Copy this onto your memory stick.

Assuming you are still using Family Tree Maker. Insert the memory stick in a USB port. In Family Tree Maker open this on the new machine usually it offers some options, select use an existing file then browse to find it on the memory stick. Family Tree Maker won't allow you to open it from a memory stick but will guide to you about storing the file on the hard drive. Follow the instructions and you are back in business.

That is useful to know, Terry. I always liked FTM2005 but made the mistake of upgrading to 2008 on my last laptop and was not too happy with it. Pleased to know that I could install 2005 on my latest laptop. Thanks.

I had my FTM2005 disk free with a Sunday magazine many years ago. I then upgraded to a newer version which my old laptop couldn't cope with (a bit like me, not enough memory). I reverted to FTM2005 and gave the newer version to a charity shop. I'm happy with the older version so am sticking with it.

Glad I could be of help

I've been using FTM2005 for about 7 years now and find it very easy to use.
My neighbour kindly installed FTM2011 for me some months ago but I must admit I don't like it very much - seems too long-winded to me and the trees it prints off aren't very good, taking up too much paper compared to FTM2005.

So I too will be sticking to the old one
