I am on a mission to map the location and concentration of all Blevins/Blethyn/Blethin/Bleddyn in Wales by post code, and then develop a mailing list to use for geograhhical/historical research. Even though the name was invented in Wales, I don't think there's too many of us left. So, it shouldn't be too daunting. Has anyone undertaken project like that?

Are you thinking of a One Name Study?
Google for 'The Guild of One-Name Studies'.
Here in Portugal we have an international firm of financial advisers called Blevins. I don't know the origins of the founder member (also a William) but I don't suppose it would be too hard to check him out.

I was going to recommend Roy Stockdill's family history blog on Findmypast where he investigated the genealogy of the respected actress Brenda Blethyn. However, it appears that Blethyn was a married name so that will be no help to the questioner
