I don't know if you have already seen this, but his marriage record from the parish registers to Mary AIRTON is on Ancestry's West Yorkshire Marriages. It took place on 20 July 1775 at Kirkby Overblow. John signed his name, Mary made her mark and the witnesses were Maria? LOWRY & Samuel STEAD. The banns were read on 25 June and the 2nd & 9th July 1775.

There are also the baptismal records on 10 January 1781 at Kirkby Overblow of John KNIGHTSON, son of John & Mary, William KNIGHTSON baptised on 5 August 1778 who was buried on 7 August 1778, Frances KNIGHTSON baptised 9 October 1786 who was buried 10 October 1786, a burial of Frances KNIGHTSON daughter of John & Mary on 24 July 1787 and a baptism on 17 June 1788 of William KNIGHTSON son of John & Mary.

There are also a few earlier KNIGHTSON records of Kirkby Overblow on Ancestry going back to 1663.

Most helpful, it has got me off to a good start with all this. Cannot find much on Mary Airton sometimes called "Massy". Also got a lead on a Prudence Gayton (1625) who was married to Xopher Knightson . They had children Bridget,Elizabeth and Christopher, not sure of dates all very vague. Also not easy accessing records from overseas.
    Cheers j

Having had a quick look at the original marriage record for John and Mary in 1775, although the handwriting would not win any prizes, it does look like they were both from the parish, and she was a spinster. It does not say what his marital status was. The witness are probably not connected with them, as if you look at the whole page which has 8 records one or both of them appear to have witnessed the events.

You said that Mary Airton was sometimes called “Massy” – are you able to elaborate on that?

Christopher and Sarah’s son Francis was baptised 12 Apr 1757 at Kirkby Overblow.

In 1741 Christopher appears in the “UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers, 1538-1893” – which is a list of Freeholders:

Where Freehold lies: Kirby Malham Place of Abode: Righton

With effectively the same credentials is an Edward Knightson, except that his place of abode is given as “Kighton”

There are three family trees with Christopher(s) and “Xopher” on Ancestry, so it might be worth contacting the tree owners to see what they will share with you.

Xpofer Knightson is listed as a Churchwarden of Harwood, but there is no date on that record.

In 1840 a John Knightson Hartley married a Rose Naylor in Batley. His father was John Knightson a labourer.

lots of useful leads. With regard to John Knightson Hartley, it would appear father was John Knightson as you found. I found a marriage of John Knightson to a Ellen Hartley in 1814 @ Batley. Not sure about connection ,? was he born before marriage date. John and Ellen also had a son William DOB 1815 who married Eliza Simpson Dob 1822 Beeston.( my direct line) They married in 1842in Batley . Her parents were Luke Simpson and Phoebe Gomersall with whom I've drawn a blank thus far. except for marriage details of 1819 in Batley.Source West Yorks Marriages and Banns 1813-1922 record. Phoebe remains a mystery!!

Joan, how about this christening record from Ancestry's 'West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812'

Phebe [sic] Gomersall born 6th Jul, christened 11th Aug 1799 at Batley All Saints, father Mathew Gomersall

And a possible sister to Phoebe which is a very informative parish entry.

Grace Gomersal , baptised 14th Mar 1805 at Batley All Saints, daughter of Mathew clo (clothier?), son of Mathew, and Hannah his wife (dau of Thomas Ryecroft). Born March 13th Gilder (Gildersome?)
