    Talking NORMAN

Hi. My brick wall is as follows...George Norman born in Winsford in 1812 married I believe Dorothy Melhuish (born 1801 in Skilgate). They appeared to have only one son..also George born in 1842. Dorothy died in 1863 and Using censuses, birth deaths &marriages have determined the following

George remained a widower until his death

George remarried in 1867, Mary Ann Burnell and had two more sons

George remarried in 1867, Ann Poole (nee Vickery) widow

Records shown all of these happened to George Norman but which one is my George???

Any help would be gratefully received

    Leigh

Various options open to narrow down the field:

    1. Where was he living in the 1861 Census and what was his occupation? Use that to compare the potential chaps in the 1871 census.

    2. Where does he say he was born in 1841, 1851 and 1861? If these are all identical then the liklihood is that he will give the same location in 1871.

    3. You could apply for the two marriage certificates in question, but asking that they checked for compatibility with his maritial status (i.e widower) and also his age, but this last bit can be very hit and miss as they might just say "of full age".

If you are referring to this set of marriages...

    Marriages Mar 1867 Dulverton 5C 451
    NORMAN, George
    BURNELL, Mary Ann
    POOLE, Ann
    TARR, John

Then, according to FreeREG, Mary Ann BURNELL married John TARR and George NORMAN married Ann POOLE. I.e.

28 Mar 1867 at Dulverton All Saints
George NORMAN, widower, labourer, father Hugh NORMAN, farmer
Ann POOLE, widow, father John VICKERY, blacksmith.

See FreeREG for futher details of the marriage.

    Welcome to the forum Leigh.
Please can you give the census references for the Georges you have found.
I cannot find a George born about 1812 in Winsford or Dulverton and married to an Ann in the 1861/1871.

Your George seems to be in 1851, HO107; Piece: 1890; Folio: 161; Page: 19
George Norman born 1812 Winsford, SOMERSET is a journeyman Maltster.
Living Dulverton with wife Dorothy born 1803 Skilgate and son George born 1842 in Dulverton.

Moving on to 1861 the details are more or less the same plus 10 years
    RG 9; Piece: 1606; Folio: 49; Page: 23

I don't know if the details below belong to one of the George Normans, if so, he is not yours.
1881 lodger, widow, retired farmer (crossed out), born 1812 Winsford with family of John and Eliza Norman, farmers.
1871 Farmer born 1812 Winsford, wife Betsy, son John at Staddon Farm
1851 and 1861 with wife Betsy etc.

Mutley these could be worth looking at, living in Dulverton...

Mary Ann NORMAN. One son is named Hugh Vicary NORMAN

    1871: RG10; Piece: 2357; Folio: 71; Page: 27

George and Mary Ann NORMAN, son Hugh and others.

    1881: RG11; Piece: 2358; Folio: 40; Page: 10

Perhaps Ann POOLE nee Vicary (who married George in 1867) is actually Mary Ann POOLE. I have to nip out for a while, so see what you think.

In 1871 there is a Mary Ann Norman born 1826 in Swimbridge and living in Dulverton with her two sons John age 3 and Hugh Vicary age 1. She is a Maltster's wife though George is not with her. The son Hugh does seem to line up with the marriage details that Olliecat found and George is with them, with occupation of Maltster in 1881.

EDIT: Just spotted your reply Olliecat. I agree with all you said above so I can stop typing now.
