Default Rachel BARTLETT in 1881 Census?

    Hello, all

I am trying to find this lady in the 1881 census, but not having much luck:

Rachel BARTLETT, aged about 67, born Box Quarries, Wiltshire, a widow.

She had lived in Bisley Parish, Gloucestershire for all of her married life, but by 1881 I am not sure where she may be. I assume she's with one of her children, but am at a loss where. She is NOT with son Thomas in Brockhampton, nor with her daughter Rachel SMITH in Woodchester. Her other children who may have still be alive in 1881 were all girls for whom I can find no marriages (and thus no surnames1): Jane (b 1838), Ann (b 1841), Fanny (b 1843), Sarah (b 1853) and Mary Jane (b 1858).

Of course, Rachel could have died between 1871 and 1881 but I can't find a death registration either.

Can any one of the eagle eyes here, spot her?

    Thank you all

    Mary Anne

    Hi Mary anne

I think she may have remarried Sep Q 1878 Stroud to a William Tyler. There is a 67 yr old Rachel Tyler b Box Wiltshire, in Elcombe, Bisley in 1881 with husband William.

In which case, her death looks to be this one:

Rachel TYLER, December quarter 1892, Stroud registration district, volume 6a, page 202, age 75.

The age is a couple of years out if born about 1814, but the person registering her death may not have known anything else.

See if she can be found in the 1891 census - Stroud covers Bisley, so she should be in the environs somewhere.

This maybe the couple in 1891
William Tyler born about 1814 in Bisley, living on own means (was a mason in 1881)
Rachel Tyler born about 1820 in Box, Wiltshire.

They are living in Yew Tree Cottages, Elcombe
    RG12/2023, Folio 18, page 3

P.S. Ancestry has transcribed the lady living next door as their mother! I don't think so.

I am not sure about this marriage for Mary Jane.
Mary Jane Bartlett is registered in Dec 1883 at Stroud with a Henry George BULLOCK.

There is an 1891 census for Henry Bullock with wife Mary Ann born 1859 in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire. That is a bit further away from Bisley than I'd like to see and it is an Ann not a Jane. They are living in St. Pancras and have a niece named Edith Bowry age 14 with them. RG12/130, Folio 38, page 14

There is another Stroud marriage of a Mary Jane in Sept 1882 to either James Franklin or George Henry Stafford but I cannot find a Mary Jane with either of these two in 1891.

I think that Fanny Bartlett was married in 1865 to William Lewis (Stroud R.D. 1865 Apr-May-Jun Vol 6A Page 530).

They are together in Bisley in 1871, with a lodger; William is a Cloth Worker. RG10 - Piece: 2631 - Folio: 21 -Page: 5 - Reg. District: Stroud - Sub District: Bisley

I understand quickly; you just have to explain things for a long time

There is a possible marriage for Ann Bartlett in Stroud in June 1861. On the same page is William Ruthers and Thomas Nicholls.
Through the following census I can see a Thomas and Ann Nicholls with their children. Ann is born 1840/1841 in either Bisley or Elcombe.

Looks like she might be your lass.
