Default Pvte Pockridge Dancey 1st Bat 44th Reg Foot

    Hi
I've found (on a pay to view site) brief details of enlistment of Pockridge DANCEY on 24 Feb 1803. (But no location). Further research in WO records shows he died in Malta in 1816 on active service.
I'm pretty sure he would have been in Ireland when he enlisted in 1803 - how do I find out where the regiment was stationed at that point? Would it automatically have been Dublin or elsewhere in Ireland? It may help me to locate what part of Ireland this Pockridge originated from
    Many thanks
    Roz

If you want the most helpful answer possible, please don't be cryptic about where you found things.

The Regiments archive shows the 1st Battalion of the 44th Foot as having been in Ireland in 1802 and in England in 1803.

You could refine the dates by looking through the Muster Rolls and Pay Lists

    The National Archives; WO 12/5641-5642

At the same time you'll be able to check the first appearance of your man.

From the Regimental Indices 1806 ( Napoleonic records 1775-1817

    Private Pockridge DANCEY
    Enlisted 24 Feb 1803
    Regiment 1/44th Foot
    Records at TNA WO25/:981

There is a Pockeridge DANCEY b 1799 Ireland listed on the Canadian census on familysearch.

    Hi
Thanks for the suggestions - especially about giving sources already used! There is a clarification n any case - Pvte Dancey was killed in 1808 not 1816. I have in fact already checked pay lists etc (got a researcher to do this as i'm not near London but I can't really afford to do much of that!)
The info I've gleaned from the 1806 Regimental Indices/Napoeonic Records give an enlistment date of 24 Feb 1803 which I had assumed would be Ireland but perhaps was in England. But in any event wherever the regiment was based in 1803 , I was hoping there might be some info about his place of residence/origin in Ireland, or another source that might indicate that. I know he is an Irish Dancey, not part of the English/Wilts/Gloucester Dancey clan

    Hi
Thanks for the suggestions; I had already checked the Mapoleonic Records & also WO paylists (which is how I got his death date which I posted wrongly & it should have been 1808). Until I found that from WO records I thought that the 1799 born Pockridge Dancey in the Canadian census & the one in the 44th REgiment were the same but clearly couldn't be. I also have now found from a Canadain land petition that there was a Pockridge Dancey making a land claim in York County Ont in 1832 on the basis of 5 years service with th 58th regiment. So i think this is the 1799 born Pockridge. But where he enlisted from into the 58th Regiment & when is still a mystery
I hadn't thought there were quite so many Pockridge Dancy's!
    thanks
    Roz
