Depends where you are looking for the information. It's a different procedure for each site.

Try going direct to the 1911 census. Insert just the surname and in the keyword field put the street.
You might need to play around a bit, maybe take out the surname and put the county or district depending on how common both the surname and street are.
P.S. Forgot to say, you need to click 'advanced search'Last edited by Mutley; 25-07-2012 at 8:45 PM. Reason: Added a P.S.

I think that there are only 3 streets in England called Zoar Street. Morley, Southwark and Yorkshire.
As a test, I entered just Zoar Street in the keyword field, it returned 996 entries in all three Counties.
Adding London, in the keyword field, it has returned 385 persons.
Hope your family do not live in a High Street.

On the main 1911 census search screen on Ancestry, can you not see a field labelled "Postal Address"?
If not check that you're using "Old Search" and have Advanced Options turned on.

I use the "New" search facility on Ancestry -- apparently. I have never searched the 1911 census by postal address until now.
When searching any UK census collection I always choose to search only the country in which I am looking. For example, when searching in the 1911 England and Wales Census Collection there are 8 parts to the collection -- look in the box at the bottom left. Choose 1911 England Census -- this gives a better set of results.
I have just searched on "35 Albert Terrace Burley Leeds" and "male". It comes up with 749,327 results sorted alphabetically by surname. As there were only about 50 houses in Albert Terrace I would suggest it is listing the results for any combination of 35 or Albert or Terrace or Burley or Leeds. If I search the same with a surname Pickering it restricts the list to 8,239 and if I put the full name Arthur Pickering it lists 390 and Arthur Pickering is the first result.
As someone suggested in an earlier post, you need to play about with your search criteria to get a useful result, or a set of results which you can reasonably trawl through.

Hi Marj,
Thanks for that but it took me a while to work out what you meant -- the penny drops increasingly slower with advancing age
. I have a subscription to A******Y for my searches and the search boxes above don't appear in the search box I am used to. Then I realised you were talking about a search on the 1911 Census site -- and it works exactly as you said.
So now I know for future reference to look at the 1911 census site to search by address.
Many thanks for the post.
