    Default Gilbert

During my research into POW I came across a Edward Theodore Gilbert a Medical Officer who was a Prisoner in Benghazi.
He survived the incident in which my Father died.
What I did find out about him was that his Family were Jewish from upper Silesia who settled in Ireland. At some time they changed their name to Gilbert.

Can anyone give me a clue on how to find out their former name.

    The Medical Register 1959 has:
Edward Theodore Gilbert ( formerly GOLDBLATT) DSO;OBE 1 Queen's Road Peckham London SE15 - Date of Place of Registration Dec 29 1934 Queen's University Belfast

You might want to check the National Archives and London Gazette Archives for possibly family name change

Many thanks for that Phillip. It explains a lot.

According to the Senior N.C.O. in the Benghazi Camp he did delay his move to Italy as long as he possibly could as he knew eventually he would get sent to Germany.
Dr Gilbert moved to New Zealand after he retired and lived with his Son Bernard I believe. He died in Auckland Hospital of a Heart Attack while he was just visiting his Grandaughter.
