    Addition to above:
Rose was age 16 when she married Joseph Campbell on 1st May 1871 at Kamptee, Bengal, India. Her father's name was Henry. Alexander Campbell was groom's father. This information came from familysearch.org and is listed under the surname of Jlott.

Well done on finding the elusive marriage gasser. So now we know that Joseph's father was called Alexander and Rosanna's was celled Henry.

Pursuing Rosanna for the moment, I wonder if these are Rosanna's parents in the census...

    1891: RG12; Piece: 889; Folio: 51; Page: 11
    Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight
ILLOT Henry 62, civil guard convict service, Woolstone Berkshire
    ILLOT Rosanna 72, Ireland

Henry and Rosanna are also in the 1881 census. Can't see Henry before this, apart from the 1841 where he is possibly with parents James and Sarah and the 1851 census.

    1881: Piece: 1177; Folio: 102; Page: 14
    1841: Piece: 27; Book: 18; Folio: 7; Page: 8
    1851: Piece: 1833 Folio: 368 Page: 21

    This could be their marriage...

    groom's name: Henry Ilott
    bride's name: Rosanna Ware
    marriage date: 09 Aug 1854
marriage place: St. Paul, Dub, Ire
    groom's father's name: James Ilott
    bride's father's name: James Gibson
    (Family Search)

There are also military records for Henry ILOTT who attested in 1851 - the attestation date is only implicitly stated. He transferred a couple fo times and ended up in the 76th Foot. His record states that he was under age on 25 Aug 1851 but of age on the 25 Oct 1851. On the last page it states that he was was born in the parish of Wolstone near Faringdon in Berkshire and was 17 years and 10 months when he attested on 25 Aug. In which case he was born in the late autumn of 1833. This does not tie in with the birth date of Henry in the census above. However, further investigation may resolve this. His intended place of residence on discharge was Newport, Isle of Wight.

I think this is Rosanna's birth in the index...

    ILOTT, Rosanna
    Regiment: 90th Light Infantry
    Place : Dublin
    Country: Ireland
    Year: 1855
    Volume : 1257
    Page: 2

There is also a birth for another child Henry ILOTT in 1857 in Salford (90th Light Infantry.) and also another child John C ILOTT in 1862 at Allahabad. There is also this baptism...

    name: John Charles Olott
    gender: Male
    baptism/christening date: 03 Apr 1862
    baptism/christening place: Allahabad, Bengal, India
    birth date: 22 Feb 1862
    father's name: Henry Olott
    mother's name: Rosa Anna

    Dear Rockyboy,

Joseph Alexander Campbell - spouse Rosanna Ilott, sons Henry Alexander, Joseph Robert and John - is my husbands great great grandfather. They arrived into Fremantle, Western Australia 18 June 1884 - John would have been 8 years old!

From my husbands family I know a fair amount about his life in WA, but not much about it before. I was trying to trace him back to the UK, but it seems you know a bit more than me. I think if we join forces we might get the whole picture. Are you on Ancestry.co.uk?

    Best Regards Cat

P.S. on the S/S Bonnington. Thank you also to gasser and ollicat for all their research. I have posted a challenge on brick walls - I am fairly new to the ancestry treasure hunt, so welcome any tips and tricks of the trade.

Looking forward to hearing from you all Cat
