My name is Kathy and I have lived in British Columbia, Canada all my life, with one trip to the UK in '67 at 13 yrs old to visit my mothers family the BROWNs. With the recent passing of my father I have found out where his birth family was from. He never spoke about them. Our family surname is SOADY and I heard on the wind that our family was from Looe, Cornwall dating back to at least 1630, if not earlier. My grandfather came to Canada in 1913. I am of Cornish, English and Native descent. I am very excited to start exploring B-G.I am so open to any suggestions or help anyone can give me.
Thank you
Kathy![]()

Welcome wolfspiritwoman if for no other reason than your name & B.C. beginnings. A wealth of romance & history there also.

Hello Kathy
There are plenty of people with the Soady surname around the Looe, Fowey area and some with the surname are
found in Plymouth, Devon. The surname seems to be more contained in that area of Cornwall/Devon rather than
down at the West Penwith end although there are one or two down there and I've even seen a Soady in the Isles of Scilly.

Welcome Kathy!
You will find lots of help in your searches here. Just fire away with the questions.
Although I now live in Ontario, I was born and raised in Salmon Arm. Are you near the UBC research farm? I am very familiar with it. I hope the flooding did not affect you and your family

Hi Sue,
I actually used to live right across the street from the UBC Research farm, we moved away from the train rumbling and congestion of the intersection to a place closer to the Ag Rec fields, less vibration from the trains but can still hear the church bells ring on the hour which we like when we are working outside and forget to watch the time.

Hi Kathy..
My brother is the director of research for the farm and a dean of agriculture for UBC so we go there whenever I am out visiting him. My favourite spot is the farm where they keep their dry cows and heifers, with an old white farm house , which is around the hill behind the main farm . I could live there quite happily and just stare at the hills all day long!...Oh, and eat the wild blackberries.!!
Anyway, Again, Welcome. I will leave this forum for what is intended... genealogy... I will pm you if I start to get homesick anymore!

Thank you Nankervis
I think i will need to get myself a good map to understand where all these places are in relation to each other. Are these communities close to each other?

Hello wolfspiritwoman
The places that I have seen the Soady name are all around the Looe/Fowey area.
Some of the places are small villages like Sheviock, Lanteglos by Fowey, Maker, Tywardreath and Duloe.
But all are up at the end of Cornwall which is nearest Devon.
An online map would be the thing for an instant look :-)
