I don't mind saving up the money to join a genealogy website as long as I now it has the information I require.
Findmypast has UK outgoing passenger lists (1890-1960). Ancestry has UK incoming passenger lists (1878-1960) and it also has other passenger lists. First, I would advise you to check with your local library to see if they provide access to either of these sites. Otherwise, look at the 'pay as you go' or subscriptions packages on offer on each site and consider signing up for a trial period. However, I would suggest that you take your time deciding and first learn a little more about family history and what records you should be looking for etc.

With respect to those passenger lists, I certainly would recommend that you obtain copies at some point. I have left off some little details (as I feel you should obtain the original images from the sites in question) and you also need to verify the information on the records for yourself.

I can view Ancestry and Findmypast for free at my local library.....check out yours. You haven't said how your father is named on your birth certificate.

Just to check out the 1935 marriage certificate (since there are some confusing details on it), I thought it might be an idea to look for Olive's parents to see if the father's name fits. However, you haven't told us his name, as recorded on the marriage certificate. His occupation would also be helpful.

If her father is named Ernest James WHALLEY, then I can see Olive's parents in the 1911 census. There are also WW1 records for Ernest, which record Olive's date and place of birth as 01 March 1913 at Mile End Old Town. A sibling is also recorded.

Hi Richard and welcome - you mention in your introductory post that your father's brothers were known by a different surname. If you are happy to give this name, (and assuming they are no longer living), it could possibly help in finding him in the 1911 census.

That's so kind of you; I wish I had some details for them.

I was hoping that if I looked up the 1911 census that might show their names.

All I know of my dad is that he was James Joseph Allen born (don't know where) 7th July 1905 and died 8th Jan. 1988 at Camden, London.

    Sumi,
Now that is interesting, about viewing Ancestry and findMyPast at your local library; I never thought of trying there. I'll go along first thing Monday morning.
