Default George Butterie 1659 - Did He Do A Runner

Family name is Butterley with many variants encountered along the way. Researching back to Jacob Buttery 1701 the family had resided mainly in the Gateshead area. Jacob has several siblings 1688-1701 and they were all fathered by George Buttery. The only George I can find is George Buttery 13 May 1659 St Mary le Bow, Durham City, parents named as Thomas and Maria/Mary, there was only one sibling Jane who was born and died in 1670 at Durham. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence to support that George must have moved to the Gateshead area in the mid 1680's, this link from 1701 Gateshead back to 1659 Durham City is fundamental to tracing the line back to the mid-late 1500's in Co. Durham.

MY BRICKWALL is that I have not been able to verify that he did move, realise of course that the 1600's were turbulent times with records lost or destroyed, I've tried everything I can think of to establish/verify that he did actually move.........checked the various trade guilds found he was admitted to the Drapers and Tailors Guild Durham in 1683, his father Thomas being admitted in 1653. Found evidence that another person born in Durham moved to Gateshead to serve a 7yr apprenticeship as a Mercer which is allied to the Drapers & Tailors, Gateshead and Newcastle were thriving towns in that period and his trade would have been much in demand, he lost his mother in 1672 his father re-married in 1673 and fathered 3 children 2 of whom died as infants, his second wife died in 1681 and he married for a third time in 1684 fathering more children 3/4 of which died as infants. By the mid 1680's George would have been in his early/mid twenties with not much of a home life and the prospects of work 15 miles up the road in Gateshead so a good chance he did move. However, if anyone can suggest how I might find more evidence of his move I'd be grateful.

Could not find a marriage for George Butterie or a burial, only his baptism in 1659.

    Cheers

    Mike

Very diificult going this far back and no doubt you have done all the usual searches including parish records.
Have you looked for his father's will. As he was a guild member I would have thought he would have had some property.
I am not quite sure where to look. The PCC has wills from 1384 but I could not find one Thomas Buttery or Butterley.

The North Eastern Inheritance Database (pre-1858 Durham Probate Records) is a searchable database of wills proven through the Diocese of Durham, which covered the following areas.
    • Northumberland (excluding Hexham and Hexhamshire, and Thockrington)
    • Tyne and Wear
    • County Durham
    • Crayke (Yorkshire) and Alston (Cumberland)
    • Northallerton and some surrounding townships in Yorkshire
    See http://
    familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/data/simple.php

Not that I could see a promising Buttery/Buttry/Buttrie will on that database. Note: if the person's property was distributed across more than province then a will might be proved at one of the prerogative courts (PCC or PCY) rather than Durham. More information is here...

I had found information about Thomas Butterie (George Butterie's father) that described him as a Mr and as a Gentleman, I therefore checked for Manorial Records, Wills etc but could find nothing, I later found a record which described him at the time of his death as a gentleman and poor inhabitant, so I guess he must have lost the family silver and would have not been in a position to support his son George. Apart from Guild records for Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne which I have searched without any luck I suppose I'm going to have settle for 'on the balance of probabilities George likely moved from Durham to Gateshead seeking work', and had probably already departed the family home being disaffected by his father who would have been on his third marriage in the mid 1680's, about the time George would have moved.

Thanks for your help and advice

    Mike
