    Thanks to all. In 1861 Joseph and Elizabeth had living with them Jethro Mashford, described as "nephew". Jethro appears to have been the son of Robert and Hannah (Longmaid) Mashford. Elizabeth and Hannah would therefore seem to be sisters. QED

    P S - Joseph did, in fact have a brother, John, born 1800. It could well have been him whose name is shown incorrectly as the groom.

    It is in the Parish Marriages section, not the Marriage Registration section, and the record gives his father's name, which is correct as you have shown it above, so enter in Joseph's name and date of marriage as 1840, county as Devon and search. Up should pop an entry in Stoke Damarel, click on that and you have full details. Elizabeth's father shown on the record matches the info of the census record given by lesleys.
