Have you found this William and Martha in the census? If so, if you give us a census reference then we can take a look.

In case this helps, this is the census information I recorded yesterday in an attempt to sort out the different William SIDEBOTHAMs. We know that your William is with Alice in the 1881 census and I won't post that data. (p.3763, f.68, p.15) Apart from your William in 1881, here are all the Williams I could find who were born in Stockport?

Which leaves two William SIDEBOTHAMs to find in the 1861 census, as so far we only have the one who was staying with Samuel DEAKIN. Will post the 1861 census in a moment.

Further to the above, we already have the William SIDEBOTHAM who is linked to Samuel DEAKIN in the 1861 census (posted above.) What about the other two Williams? Well...

    1861: Piece: 2560 Folio: 38 Page: 35
4 Wrights Buildings, Bank Field Street, Heaton Norris, Stockport
    HOGG, William, head, 58
    HOGG, Mary, wife, 54
    HOGG, Miles, son, 20
SIDEBOTHAM, William, lodger, unm, 20 (b. 1841), Callooker(?) Factory, Stockport Cheshire

Can't find another William who was born abt. 1840 +/- 2 in Stockport in the 1861 census. There is however a William SIDEBOTTOM, who was born abt 1840 in Heaton Norris. Perhaps he later records his birth place as Stockton.

    1861: Piece: 3022; Folio: 11; Page: 15
    Oldham, Lancashire
    SIDEBOTTOM, William 50, cotton spinner
    SIDEBOTTOM, Mary A 45
SIDEBOTTOM, William 21 (b. 1840), son, cotton piecer, Heaton Norris
    SIDEBOTTOM, George 12
    SIDEBOTTOM, Sarah 8
    SIDEBOTTOM, Martha 6
    SIDEBOTTOM, Ely 4
    SIDEBOTTOM, John 1

The question is, which one of these (if either) married Mary WOOD and which one married Mary PLATT? I could speculate, but I'll leave it here for the moment.

I too have William Sidebotham b. 1839 in my family tree and have made the deduction that his mother was Mary Swanton. I have come to the conclusion that he was born in Heaton Norris and that the family moved to New Bridge Lane, Stockport, a few doors down from the Deakin family. Samuel Pownall Deakin and William Sidebotham moved to Wigan and William's sister, Ann married Samuel P. Deakin who set up the Deakin Jam company with his son William R. Deakin.

i have a brick wall: reports of the Deakin Jam company documents in the late 1890s refer to Jno. (I have presumed this to be Jonathan) Sidebotham of Stockport but I have been unable to trace him so the first name could be incorrectly reported. Have you come across Jno. Sidebotham amongst your Sidebothams? Could this be William's son if indeed he had a son?

I'm away fom home and all my records until the end of next week, meantime, could you say a bit more about Jno (who might be either Jonathan or John)?

I know there was a second marriage/family somewhere at the end ofthe 19th century but can't remember the details.

Since posting the above I have found the Jno. Sidebotham I was looking for - he is the son of Henry Sidebotham and Mary Baines, Henry being William Sidebotham's youngest brother and recorded as being 'Manager, Deakin's Jam'.

Thanks for your reply. It certainly is quite a job working out all the different Sidebothams and which family is which

It certainly was quite a job! so many similarities, including the two Williams' mothers widowed and remarried in the same ten year period, but remarried and living in Wigan is the Swanton clincher.

A random thought: I wonder why 'Jno Sidebotham of Stockport' when the family had been in Wigan 30 years?
