Default HENRY MORWITCH & SOPHIA LAZARUS

I have posted a new thread relating to Henry Morwitch and his wife Sophia Lazarus in an attempt to develop and identify the relationships between the Morwitch/Nathan and Levy/Lewis lines. This post relates to the Maurice Newton Nathan and the Edward Lawrence Levy posts.
    One outstanding query identified on genealogy posts on other sites was who was Sophia the wife of Henry Morwitch. The answer is to be found in the Otago Daily Times Issue 728 18 April 1864;
On the 23 March at the residence of H E Nathan Esq, North East Valley, by the Rev D Isaacs, Henry Morwitch of Tokomairio, late of Ballarat, Victoria to Sophia fourth daughter of the late Lewis LAZARUS Esq, London England

I have yet to identify precisely which Lewis Lazarus was the father of Sophia but I will identify the various relationships between the Nathan/Morwitch and others as I currently understand it. It maybe that this data has limited relevance to the Levy lines described by Robert and myself nonetheless the data will help those who do have ancestors and descendants relevant to these individuals.

    Default HYAM EDWARD NATHAN

The following post identifies the relationships between Hyam Edward Nathan ( also known as H E Nathan) as one of the descendants of Jacob Hyam Nathan and his father Hyam/Hiam Nathan.
The Sydney Morning Herald Monday 21 Dec 1885 records the death of Hyam; Dec 19 at his residence Christchurch, NZ Hyam Edward Nathan aged 58 the beloved father of John H Nathan and Mrs D Davis, Orwell St Potts Point.
The cemetery scribes and synagogue scribes sites have records on the Nathan lines. Hyam was the son of Edward Ezekiel Nathan and Rachel Davis. See Cemetery Scribes Person ID 1839 for the death and burial of Rachel in 1852 aged 49. The children of Edward and Rachel were: Kate b 1825;Hyam b1826;Isaac b 1829;Henry b 1834;Joseph b 1835;Elizabeth b 1838; Lewis (Louis) b 1839
There is a website for Linwood Cemetery NZ which indicates that Hyam and his wife Sarah were originally buried in Hereford Street Jewish Cemetery but the remains and those of others were removed and re- buried in Linwood in 1943.
Edward Nathan was the son of Jacob Hyam Nathan and Polly Isaacs. Jacob was the son of Hyam Nathan- the will summary of Hyam and Jacob can be seen on Syagogue Scribes Jewish Wills 18-19th C.
In the will of Sophia Morwitch both Henry Lewis and Joseph Alfred Nathan challenged the bequests as her nephews. Subject to confirmation, Joseph appears to be the son of Edward and Rachel and was a NZ solicitor.
The relationships between these Nathan and the Levy still requires further research.

    Default HENRY LEWIS-JOSEPH NATHAN

The Australian Newspaper archives have several accounts of the Sarah Morwitch probate dispute including the addresses of her two named nephews who were seeking to have her final will over ruled. The court case lasted several years.
The Singleton Argus ( NSW) Fri 21 May 1837 P4 refers to the caveat of "Henry William Lewis, a grillroom manager of a Sydney hotel.... and George Alfred Nathan a solicitor of Denilquin were mentioned in the previous will of Mrs Morwitch but were omitted from her last will..."
The Sydney Morning Herald Fri 14 Sept 1834 P6 referring to Mrs Morwitch will ..." she made pecuniary bequests by her will... including of about £26000 to Mrs Ray Davis, Sydney..... opposed by Henry Lewis her nephew a waiter at the Hotel Australia..."

Singleton Argus NSW Weds 7 April 1837 referred to the withdrawal of a caveat contesting the Sophia Morwitch will by Joseph Alfred Nathan solicitor of Denilquin but the continuing caveat of Mr William Lewis of Sydney her nephew
The Cumberland Argus Weds 17 April 1918 referred to a case involving Henry William Lewis Head waiter Hotel Australia

There are further newspaper articles relating to Joseph Alfred Nathan solicitor on different topics. I suspect the reference in the 1937 article to George Alfred Nathan rather than Joseph was an error since his name Joseph appears in the other accounts as a solicitor at Denilquin.
How Henry William Lewis and Joseph Alfred Nathan relate to Sophia Lazarus and Henry Morwitch as nephews remains to be confirmed.
