    Red face Hadlands

My descendants Charles Hadland came from Maidstone in Kent and travelled to Ararat Victoria during the 1850's He had a brother John and I am trying to search for his English background and relatives. If anyone could help that would be great. Libby

Do you have an approx date of birth for Charles & John ? The Australian Vital Records has the death of John Hadland aged 64 in 1887, Ararat, Victoria. His parents are given as Chas Hadland and Eliz Horwood.

There is also the death of Caroline Amelia Hadland aged 58 in 1879, Victoria, from Somersetshire.

The marriage certificate can be ordered from the GRO. The references are:
March quarter 1848, Richmond S registration district, volume 4, page 379: John HADLAND and Caroline Amelia BASSETT are both on that page.

Could this be John HADLAND and his wife Caroline Amelia in the census here (based on the brother-in-law's surname)...

A little more on Caroline Amelia BASSETT. There is a baptism for her brother William in Bridgwater, Somerset on 30 Jun 1837. Parents are Samuel and Selina. Samuel's occupation is Officer of Excise. I saw at least one other baptism of a child in Bridgwater but not Caroline's. See FreeREG.

However, although Caroline appears to have been born in Somerset or thinks she was, there is a baptism for Caroline Amelia Wintle BASSETT in 1823 in Devon. Parents as above. See the pay/subscription site findmypast for further details.

Just spotted some information on the HADLANDs and BASSETSs here...

Also, it appears that Charles HADLAND married Lucinda Hulbert LONG. There is a marriage in the index in 1850 in the district of St. Giles. Then there is this in the census...

On 23 April 1842 at the parish church Islington John Hadland, servant married Lucy Green. Both of full age, John's father is Charles Hadland, horse trainer. I can't find the death of a Lucy Hadland between 1842 & 1848, I wonder what John's "condition" is in 1848, single or widowed ?
