Default george tetlow 1828 blackley lancashire

I’m here again asking for help.

Thomas Tetlow was my great grandfather. I have Thomas’s birth certificate and marriage certificate confirming his father as George Tetlow and mother Margaret Tetlow formerly Bowker. He was born 22nd March 1858 at 11 Copestick Street Manchester (district of Ancoats). George was a wood turner.

I have been unable to find any record or reference to the marriage of George and Margaret and it has been suggested to me that perhaps they never married.

I have been trying to find George’s parents.
    1841 census HO107 piece 577 book/folio 27/12 page 19
shows George Tetlow aged 13 born 1828 with presumably mother Esther and sister Mary born 1837. They are living in Copestick Street which makes this the most likely George Tetlow I have found. My father told me the Tetlows came from Blackley.
There is also Martha Cheetham born 1821 .

    1851 census HO107 piece 2226 folio 696 page 28
George and Margaret with son Robert 7 mon living at 11 Copestick Street.
    1861 census RG 09 piece 2932 folio 31 page 16
at 11 Copestick Street with Elizabeth 1853, Mary 1856 and Thomas 1858 No Robert.
    1871 census RG 10 piece 4031 folio 129 page 23
    1881 RG11 piece 3986 folio 79 page 46
    1891 RG12 piece 3235 folio 19 page 34

    from family search and LancPOL
Mary Tetlow was born to Joseph and Esther Tetlow baptised 10 July 1837 in Blackley
Hannah Tetlow born to Joseph and Esther Tetlow bap 6 Dec 1832 buried 13 jul 1834
John Tetlow born to Joseph and Esther 1830 died 1831
Joseph Tetlow married Esther Kay 2 jan1830 Manchester
Joseph Tetlow born to James and Hannah Tetlow bap 16 nov 1806 Blackley
Joseph Tetlow died jun q 1840 manchester ie before 1841 census

There are several Esther Kays born in Blackley about the right time and several of them had children whilst still single women.
One Esther Kay had George Kay who was baptised 2 sept 1827 at St Peters Blackley.
I have not found a death recorded for George Kay and cannot find him on censuses which made me wonder if he became George Tetlow when Esther and Joseph married.
If that is the case then finding his biological father is going to prove very difficult and even establishing which Esther Kay is his mother may be impossible

Any suggestions of where I can take this further would be very welcome thank you

    Could this marriage be relevant?

15 Nov 1849, George KAY to Margaret BOOKER, Manchester Cathedral.

    hi
    thank you
that looks a very promising avenue to pursue-only recently considered George might be Kay rather than Tetlow and never thought about checking for marriages as Kay as always Tetlow in census
I might need to send for a certificate I think as Booker very near to Bowker and date close to to son Roberts birth
If I do and get a result will let you know with many thanks

That's great!!!... finally a hole in that brick wall.

Have you checked the original register entry at Blackley for George's baptism, to see if there is anything written in the margins?
I once found a father's name that had been crossed out, and it did not appear on the transcript.

    Hi Mona

I have the entry for his birth taken from a parish register image on familysearch. Will the actual register possibly show more?

I also today received the marriage certificate. Not quite as straightforward.

    Nov 15th 1849
George Kay 22 bobbin turner 66 Every Street father Joseph Kay shuttlemaker
Margaret Booker 22 66 Every Street father John Booker engineer
Witnesses Joseph Bentley Emma Kay or possibly May
Cath. Parish church Manchester parish by banns

Margaret Bowker’s father John was an engineer
    as per1851 census HO107 2155 42 19

George Tetlow bobbin turner in 1851 census
Esther Kay married Joseph Tetlow who was a shuttle maker so ? Joseph Kay on certificate for appearances sake

Robert Kay born August 1850 9 months after marriage

I am trying to find Copestick Street and Every Street on map but I think they are fairly close to each other in Ancoats Manchester.

I don’t know what to make of the fact that James Copestick and his family lived at 66 Every Street in 1851 census.

You can see the streets here. Taken from a map c 1849.

My grandparents were living on Every St when they married in 1918. In fact 5 generations lived in this part of Ancoats, a few streets around St. Anne's RC church, from about 1840 to 1930s. People seemed to move quite frequently, so it is not surprising that someone else was living at 66 Every St in 1851, 18 months after the marriage of George and Margaret.

Quite a tangled web you have. Not sure if you will ever know for sure who the father of George Kay/Tetlow is. If you have an image of the actual register and there is no clue.

    Thanks for the map.
I was just curious about the family Copestick and the street Copestick as not that common a name.
I do tend to agree that George's father may never be found for sure but with your help Ive got this far thank you

    hi Mona
just want to say thank you again. I have made little progress with George Kay's father but doing better with Esther Kay side of family. There appears to be much intermarrying between Kays Thorps Jacksons and Tetlows in Blackley and its taking time to sort them all out.

    Hi Karen
Glad you are making headway on one line at least! Sometimes leaving a twig alone for a while and revisiting at a later date clears the fog.
Interesting about Copestick St. The street is/was quite short, and James Copestick living at 66 Every St in 1851, was listed as "Proprietor of Houses". Perhaps he developed that street? On the map I provided there seems to be only a row ten houses.
In 1861 his widow Hannah is living at 68 Every Street and is "independent", so he must have left her well provided for.
    Happy Hunting :-)
