My 2nd. great gandfther on my fathers side was, Thomas King (1796-1865) he sired by Ann Gedge/Gage (1810-1864) a single woman, a son Wiliiam Geadge/Gedge/Gage (b. 1826 at King Sreet, Norwich, but lived at Little Ellingham). Thomas is mentioned on Williams marriage certificate in 1851, as Thomas King , Gardener. A Thomas King, gardener, is mentioned in the 1851 Census as living at Stalling Common, Great Ellingham, aged 55, unmarried and given as born abt. 1796 at Little Ellingham. He is again mentioned in 1861 as living at Rockland St. Peter, aged 66, unmarried. Free-BMD gives a Thomas King to die in the Mar qtr. 1865 in the Wayland Reg. Dist. That I am afraid, in spite of extensive searching, is all I have been able to find out about him. No parents, siblings, etc. Therefore is there anyone in the Norfolk County Wide Forum able to assist me in finding out any further information?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards

William King born c1811 says he was born in Ellingham in the 1871 Census [RG10/1832 fol. 43 p. 12] as he does in the 1861 Census [RG9/1230 fol. 40 p. 13].
Despite his saying in the 1851 Census that he was born in Broome [HO107/1820 fol. 468 p. 10] and in 1841 living in Broome [HO107/ 779, Book 4, fol. 4, p. 2], have you ruled him out as being a relative? – a brother?
I’ve noticed that there are King and Gedge names in Little Ellingham c1810.malcolm99

Norfolk folk like to confuse people.
There's Great Ellingham, Little Ellingham, and plain Ellingham.
The first two are near each other and are sort-of north-west of Attleborough.
Plain Ellingham is near Broome, and if it was much further south it would be in Suffolk. As it is, it's sort-of north-east of Bungay (which is in Suffolk).

Thanks Pam,
I have actually visited Little and Great Ellingham as well as the two Rocklands and other villages in the area. Looking at the churches and graveyards, but with little success in terms of family memorials. I have also been trying to find the Parish Registers on line for the area, but unlike Lincolnshires "Lincs to the Past" I have not been successful.
Regards,
John

Like 'Lincs to the Past' some, but not all, of the Norfolk PRs, BTs, banns, and other Norfolk stuff is online at FamilySearch.
Start here https://www.familysearch.org/
Scroll down to browse, and click United Kingdom and Ireland.
Scroll down to England, Norfolk.
When you select Parish registers you need to scroll down to browse, and then click on the link.
For browsing the BTs and ATs you need to know which Deaconry the place is in, and do read the 'learn more' sections.
http://www.
origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/norfolk/gaz-and-dir/parishes/ (you have to scroll down a lot
)
origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/
might be useful.
Quite a lot of Norfolk parishes are on FreeREG.

Hi Pam,
Thanks for that info. I had it before, about a year ago, when researching my Gage/Gedge connection, but the PSU on my desktop PC went belly up and since then I have been using my laptop, which wasn't backed up quite to that moment. So having forgot how to get there I wasn't able to make the connection, even though I new it was through LDS, didn't think of the Browse button, very remiss of me. But now, thanks to you, I can search the Parish Registers, etc to my hearts content. Which is exactly what I have been doing. I have tried six villages all to no avail, not just no Thomas King, but precious few Kings, only a Thomas who was buried 1895 at one of the Rocklands. So the search goes on. At least now I can check out my Gage - Debenham connections. I had already searched exhaustively Free-REG , again without success. Thanks again anyway for all your help and particuarly the pointers to the Parish Registers.
Regards,
John
P.S. I forgot to mention in my original Post that Thomas Kings son William was originally named Thomas (1841 Census). It would appear that from then on he adopted the name of William, possibly in honour of his step-father William Spurgeon, whos son, another Thomas, was a witness at William's wedding. Here is the burial for your Thomas in Rockland All Saints in 1865 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3....WLR:2016652057where the workhouse was situated.
It doesn't give you any more information I'm afraid

Thanks Kaysii,
Interesting that he was back living again in Little Ellingham, which kind of confirms that he is one and the same person as my Thomas King.

John

I find the following useful when trying to find other information that might be available. First the NROCAT online catalogue. It has a very simple search engine so you have to imagine all the possible spellings and use combinations of forename then surname and then vice versa to find documents that are held by the NRO. Unfortunately with King it will pick out a lot of Kings Lynn documents!

There was a probate record mentioned for a Thomas King of Great Ellingham in the 1820s. Norfolk sources http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.go...veNS/index.htm has some of these on line.
Here it is
http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.go...7215\01736.jpg and here

You may have found a Thomas King and his wife Sarah having a child Sophia in Great Ellingham in 1792 and wondered if they had any other children. From this probate it would seem that they did not have any more surviving children as Sophia is claiming she is the only legal next of kin. He might have been related in another way.
Best wishes, Kaysii
