Indeed. Hopefully the offer of a look up on the Canadian census will show his occupation - I don't have access to worldwide records.

I was wondering whether you have Edward de Winter Hume's will as it may give further information- it's probate date is 1933 on Ancestry. He was quite well off - he left nearly £5000.

Which specific records are you referring to? You have said that you already have Roderick's military record, so if you are referring to Thomas Ross HUME's CEF military record, you should be able to get hold of a copy of his service record through the Library and Archives of Canada.
See here.
Note: There also appears to be military records for Thomas on Ancestry under the title of Canada, Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918. These could be the same records but I can't tell - not having a worldwide sub either. You could check your local library to see if it has a worldwide subscription to Ancestry so you can view these records.
Note: You may also want to view a border crossing record for Thomas Ross HUME, he crossed from Canada to St Albans, Vermont, USA on 24 Sep 1912.

Malcolm: Yes, I have Edward De Winter Hume's will which is where I found Alice's married name and details of the three children - only previously knowing about two of them from 'family folklore'.
Olliecat: I was referring to Roderick Hume's military records. I found the WWI Medal Index Cards but haven't done further research on his military service. I was wondering if your link to WO would take me to online information.
I've started to make a list of all the useful links/websites here which I haven't known about before!

He doesn't appear to be there & neither does Ethel Forshaw ( Olliecat's #20). If he was in "Canada" he may well have been in Newfoundland which at the time was a separate Dominion and not part of Canada proper - and of course it was where Ethel was born.
Edit: or of course he may have been in the USA as possibly implied by Olliecat's #25;Last edited by malcolm99; 12-06-2012 at 8:25 PM. Reason: added edit

If you check the 'online and ordering information' for WO 339/16392, you will be informed that the record has not been digitised and cannot be downloaded. You can however request a quotation for a copy to be digitised or printed and sent to you.
See the ordering and viewing information here.
Note:
There is general information on the type of records kept in series WO 339 here. You may wish to check this out first. You may also be interested in their brief guide to 'Looking for records of a British Army officer after 1913' here.

Well, I'm still looking for Alice Crowther with husband Robert Harold Crowther and, at least, son Edward George in 1911. I've tried various options and places but no sign of any of them. I'm omitting young Kathleen from the search because although she was born Q1 1911 I think she may be 'doubtful' for the count. Alice and Robert may not have been together at the time - Alice in hospital or with family or friends with a new baby? (Another 1911 birth I have on another branch has mum and baby in maternity with husband listed all alone at home.)
I've tried searching with very little information in the search options but still get nothing.
Kathleen Elizabeth born 1911 and Robert Lionel born 1912 - both in the Wirral (Tranmere) would suggest the family should be around there in 1911 but still nothing shows.
Still quite a mystery about this woman and her family. It started by finding she seems to be the only one of her parents' six children not to be baptised in Ireland - or at all. A recent living relative I've found didn't even know she existed - I'm beginning to wonder if she did too!
Can anyone see her/husband/son/daughter in 1911?
Audrey
