I'm having real trouble finding loads of people in the 1911 census.
I'm looking for Alice Crowther born 1882, Edward John Hume born 1883, Roderick Stuart Hume born 1884 and Thomas Ross Hume born 1886 - all born in Ireland. These four are siblings. Their eldest sibling had emigrated by 1911 and I have found the youngest of the brood (Claude Lionel Hume born 1888).
An Alice Crowther (right year of birth) appears in a General Hospital in Cheltenham, Gloucester as a patient but the number of years married/number of children are not right and she gives her place of birth as Cheltenham. I did consider she might be denying her Irish roots but nothing much else is right either. I haven't been able to pinpoint a marriage record for Alice either although I am sure she married a Mr. Crowther and they had three children: Edward George (1909ish), Kathleen Elizabeth (early 1911 - pre-census, probably) and Robert Lionel (born 1912). Alice's married name and children came from her father's will although she and her husband are supposed to have "died young" - goodness knows when or where.
I've also tried searching for her son Edward George Crowther but get nowhere with that either.
Is it me?
Audrey

The only Edward George CROWTHER I could find was born in 1909 in Gloucestershire, mother maiden name GRAINGER. (from Gloucestershire bmd indexes)
Kathleen Elizabeth CROWTHER mmn HUME b. 1911, and Robert Lionel CROWTHER mmn HUME b. 1912 are on Cheshire bmd, Wirrall, sub district Tranmere.
PS sub distict for Kathleen is Bebbington, this is first quarter 1911 so you would think she would be on the census!Last edited by Mona; 12-06-2012 at 4:39 PM. Reason: addition

I think that the 1906 marriage is correct (I now see Mona has confirmed it) as Robert Harold Crowther is in the 1901 Census in Chorley Old Road, Bolton living with his parents and a younger brother Lionel Percy Crowther age 14, whose name seems to fit nicely with Robert Lionel born 1912. According to the census Robert Harold Crowther was born in Melinerby, Cumbria (actually I suspect this is Melmerby).
RG13 Piece 3606 fol. 59 p. 1
Addition: Mona's #3 confirms the 1901 census where Robert Harold's father is a "Head School Master"Last edited by malcolm99; 12-06-2012 at 4:42 PM. Reason: added Addition

There are military records on Ancestry for an Edward John HUME, born abt 1883 in St Marks, Armagh. He attested to the Connaught Rangers in 1901. Regimental number 7040. Next of Kin: father Edward De Winter Hume.
Edward died in Poona in India in 1907 and so he won't be in the 1911 census.
Note: his death is registered in the GRO Army Death Indices

Well, if it helps at all, Roderick is in West Yorkshire in 1915, getting married to a lady called Ethel Maud May Hopkinson at St Margaret Frizinghall. His father is named as Edward De Winter Hume. His occupation is - Lieutenant in the King's Liverpool Regiment. His residence was recorded as Knowsley, Prescott.
Note: I can seen entry for him in the WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, his rank on the card was captain.
Edit: his service records can be found on the National Archives under WO 339/16392 War Office: Officers' Services. His Long number is 33532.

In 1911, I believe Roderick can be found in Waddington in Lancashire. Visiting a MALLISON family.
1911: RG14/24976 SN121
Transcribed on Ancestry as Roderick Thurart HINNER and on FMP as Rooderick Kurst HINNER. To me the name looks like Roderick Stuart HUMES.

According to a tree on Ancestry, Thomas Ross HUME travelled to Canada on 29 Jan 1910. So, perhaps he was not in the UK in 1911. Have you looked at the 1911 Canadian census? Will take a look in a moment if I have the time.
In case you have not found these, his CEF attestation papers can be found on the Library and Archives of Canada. See here.
