    Hello again Lee,

Do you have their marriage certificate?

There is a marriage registered for John LICKISS in Sculcoates in the December quarter of 1855, volume 9d, page 277 with an Ann Hollingsworth HOLDEN on the same page. Please note the slightly different surname for Ann.

    Is this them?

Mmm, I'm afraid I'm going to throw a bit of a spanner into the works here . . . FamilySearch has the marriage on 1 November 1855 at Hedon of Ann Hollingsworth Holden (aged 23) and John Lickiss (aged 22), but it gives her father's name as Robert Holden.

On the 1881 census as transcribed on FamilySearch, there are these three ladies at Tremayne House, Wilberforce Street, Kingston upon Hull (RG 11/4768, f.125, p.33):

Mary Howden, head, widow, 63, glass merchants widow
Mary Cooper, neice [sic], widow, 28, horse dealers widow
Ann Lickiss, sister in l., married, 49, corn merchants wife

    all born in Hull.

So Ann's brother is presumably a Mr Howden [or Holden], glass merchant, who died before the 1881 census.

We have found some items that suggest that the Holden is wrong. The Hollingsworth fits

In that case, I would suggest that you obtain the marriage certificate. Just because there is one letter difference in Ann's surname, does not make it wrong. Names were recorded as they were heard and HOWDEN and HOLDEN can sound very similar with a South Yorkshire accent - especially in the 1850s when accents were a lot stronger than they are today. (My great grandfather's brother was recorded in the 1841 census as Sarah instead of Pharaoh, but both names sound similar when said in the old flat Essex accent.)

Also, please be aware that spelling did not really settle down until the beginning of the 20th century as literacy became nore widespread.
