I take it you mean Olive's mother rather than John's mother.

My initial thought is that it would help to know where she was born. Do you have any idea? If she died after mid-1969, then her birth date and place of birth could be recorded on her death certificate - that's if the informant knew of course.

    Sandy,

Do you know Olive Miller's birthday? i.e day and month. If so, it would be possible to check the GRO birth index to see if there are any likely candidates? Assuming she was born in Co Durham there are only 4 b 1910 +/- 1 year.

Hi I have been told by my aunt from the other side of my family who know Olive that she was about 64 year old when she died in 1974 at Aston Tirrold in Berkshire/Oxfordshire. At the time of her death she and John were living with one of there children. I have also been told that until she moved down south that she had always lived in the Durham area. I do know from my aunt that Olive had had a accident something to do with a dog and she was in poor health after that.My aunt also said that when Olive died that did not knw for sure where iis was born Thank you Sandy

If this is her death certificate...

    Death Jun 1974 Wallingford 20 2501
    Olive Metcalfe
    Birth Date: 3 Jun 1909
    Age at Death: 65

Then I would go with Pennydog's excellent suggestion and ask the GRO to look for a birth for an Olive Miller in Durham with a birth date of 3 Jun 1909.

By the way, there is this birth in the index that might fit and interestingly I can't seem to pin her down in the 1911 census yet...

Birth Jun 1909 Chester le Street 10a 685
    Olive Miller

Note: Don't give the GRO the index reference for this birth. Let them search as suggested above - by birth date.
