I have an 1861 census which lists
Walter Smith born about 1843 Rutland
Walter and Louisa Smith parents
Logner Smith 20
Unicer Smith 11
Divers Smith 7
The only Walter Smith i can find on the 1871 census that seems to fit is
Walter Smith 26
Louisa Smith 25
Alfred Smith 8
Walter Smith 1
Violet Smith 40
The snag is Violet is down as Walters Mother instead of Louisa, as on the 1861 census. Is it likely that Violet could be Louisa's mother and this is a mistake.
Any help, ideas appreciated.Thanks

Sorry, but this doesn't seem clear. If Walter and Louisa are parents in 1861 (and Walter must be 18 or so), then who are they the parents of? The other people mentioned are far too old....
The best way t osort out census problems is to give the reference so members can look at the details and hopefully sort things.

The census refs seem to be:
1861: RG9/2308 fol. 12 p. 21
1871: RG10/3279 fol. 78 p. 14
1881: RG11/1576 fol. 74 p. 33
My initial thought is that Violet may be Louisa’s mother but I haven’t identified the marriage as yet.malcolm99

No i haven't been able to find a Marriage yet. I was taking the 18 year old Walter on the 1861 to be the 26 year old Walter on the 1871. However i've grave doubts about this as it would mean that Walter same name as Father would have married wife who has same name as his Mother. Not sure how likely that is. I've never heard of it before.
I'm 100% certain that the 1881 census is correct, working backwards from 1911
But many thanks for your help.

Looking at the 1861 for Violet Smith finds her at RG9/2291 folio 14 page 21 where she is shown as married to a Christopher Smith b.1831.
A corresponding marriage is at Apr-Jun quarter 1858 Leicester 7a ,page 290 Christopher Smith / Violetta Hartshorne. The 1851 has her as Violet Hartshorn.

I had found them in 1901 but not 1891 or 1911.

1891 I make it to be RG12/2534 folio 127 page 36,seems to be him but shown as single with a Lucy Smith shown as single but something has been erased on the original.
Also 2 doors down at 5 Royal East Street is an Alfred Smith b.Northamptonshire 1862 which fits with son Alfred on the 1881.
