Around London (perhaps other places too) the postmen carried their bundles of mail tied up with bits of string which were thrown on the pavement as the bundle was opened. The string was collected by keen youngsters and recycled. Oranges came wrapped in tissue paper which was kept to be used as toilet paper.

Newspapers cut into squares and hung by bits of string tied to a nail were used as toilet paper.
Newspapers also wrapped our fish and chips.

There must be some sort of logic there, newspapers wrapped what went in one end and also wrapped what came out t'other!
whatever it was, either end, I hope it was not green!
