    Default John Atherton, Wigan 1781

I'm trying to trace the parents of John Atherton who was born in Wigan in 1781.

He was a gardener and eventually left Wigan and settled in Outwell in Cambridgeshire where he had the following children:
    Thomas 1801
    Mary 1802
    John 1804-1810
    William 1805
    Joseph 1807
    John 1814

    Family Search has this record:

    Birth: 14th February 1780
    Christening: 5th March 1780 Wigan
    Father: THO ATHERTON
    Mother: BETTY ROBY

The batch number is C005564, with the film number being 6904006.

I know that it is a year out from that stated, but you never know...

Perhaps order it from your local Family History Centre so that you can see if there are any other clues.

    Hi all

I'm now pretty certain that John was born in Blackrod, near Wigan in 1781. His father was John and his mother was Alice.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can go from here? The Blackrod parish records in book format are hellish expensive at £25

From our sponsors, Parish Chest, they are £15. Have a look here.

    lovely!... thanks Jan

I've also found online a brilliant source for the Lancashire Parish Registers at:
    http://www
    .lan-opc.org.uk/

... and this has already shot down my theory that John was born in Blackrod... one did but died several years later.

oh well... back to the drawing board!
