Thanks Olliecat, I have finally come to the conclusion that this Charles is the most likely father to my 2 x grt grandfather, hence more research. You are right he could well have returned home and died before the next census, not sure of any family in the Croydon area, but it can't be ruled out can it.

Thanks to Waitabit above for the link, ticket of leave date 1867, conditional pardon date 1872 - not entirely sure what that means at present, only really started looking at this yesterday properly so more reading to do on the whole subject. I didn't realise I could get a copy of his convict record thanks for that will go look at that in bit.

Is there any way of finding out what happened to a convict after they arrived in Australia ?
... Not sure where to start looking so see what happened to him - any suggestions gratefully received.

Wenryar again. Just had another look at the info on Convicts to Australia. Just follow the prompts. (Not the Wikipedia Site). Not so odd that his occupation is different from that on Waitabit's list. Even more reason to try for the original copy, if you can read it. The original lists of additional details were often set up in a way that one could easily read a line that actually belonged to the next convict. Both sites recommend that you refer to original doc. if there are discrepancies. On Cons.To Aus. he is married with 2 children so you are probably correct that he is 3xgr Grandpa! The originals often tell you if he was released to work for anyone and names of employers. Tas Archives hold the Tasmanian records but that may be different in the west. Could be Public Records. I'll check or if anyone knows already, I'm sure they will post it here. Cheers.

Unless anyone can come up with another source, from what I have found today, it looks as though the convict records in W.A. have not been digitised yet and they, along with other records can be viewed in the reading rooms of State Records Office! Try emailing the searchroom: sro@sro.wa.gov.au or drop them a note at: Alexander Library Building, James Street West Entrance, Perth Cultural Centre. Perth W.A. 6000. Fingers crossed, that they have a copying service. wendyar

Great, thanks for that, I did have a look and couldn't find anything online and wondered what to do next - still very very new at this particular branch of my tree. I will contact them and see what they can do to help. Thanks again for your help
