John Gale was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Gale. He was baptised in Bridport o April 5, 1771. This indicates a possible birth in late 1770 or early 1771.
So far, so good
There are 2 possible marriages for a John Gale. One was to an Ann Gregory on March 1, 1799 in Bearminster. Both he and Ann are still alive in 1841 still in Bearminster and can be found on the census - H0107/Piece 280/Book 1/folio33/Page37.
The 2nd is to my 1st cousin [many times removed] named Catherine [Kitty] Ackerman. This is the one I believe to be correct. They were married in Bridport on June 7, 1801. In the 1841 census, Catherine is living in Bridport and can be found at H010/Piece 294/Book 4/Folio 42/Page 24. John is not with her.
Catharine dies just prior to the 1851 census. Her death certificates states that she was the widow of John Gale. It did not state the occupation of John.
Since I couldn't find him on the 1841 census I stared looking for a death prior prior to 1841. All have been subsequently eliminated [at least from 1821-1840] I now have 5 possible - between 1842 and 1849 - all in Bridport.
I don't believe his death cert. will show the name of his spouse [unless she is the informant] and as I don't know his occupation I cannot specify, so how do I find the correct one?

The 5 possible deaths of John Gale after 1841 in Bridport are:
Oct-Dec. 1842 vol.8 page 33
Apr-Jun. 1843 vol. 8 page 21
Oct-Dec. 1845 vol. 8 page 20
Apr-Jun. 1848 vol. 8 page 22
Apr-Jun. 1851 vol. 8 page 25
The search criteria for a date of birth covered the years 1761-1771 as his baptism was on April 5, 1771.
FMP has nothing in their burial index of P/R's for Dorset, the GRO has no deaths in Bridport prior to the one in 1842 and I can't find any evidence of a Will. That leaves me with Bridport P/R's to check.
The 1841 census - viewed on FMP - has 5 John Gale's born between 1765 and 1771. 3 are located in Bearminster and are definitely not him. The other 2 are in Weymouth and are also not him. Widening the search criteria did find a John Gale with a Catharine in the registration District of Bridport. He is indicated as born in 1763 and she in 1784. Given the age difference it could be a father/daughter relationship. The residence is Lanthorn Gate, Bothenhampton. The refence is H0107, Piece 280, Book 18, Folio6, Page 6.
Can another John Gale be found in Dorset close to Bridport?

The Bothenhampton John was buried 30 Apr 1849 age 81 according to Dorset Burial records at Ancestry.
Kitty was buried 17 Feb 1851 at Bridport.
But there is no John buried at Bridport of the right age, the one buried in 1843 was b 1816

There are no other ones that fit and so I have sent an email to the OPC but in the past he has not responded so I'm not sure if he is no longer doing lookups.
The death in Otober-December 1842, may be the right one, but until I can that person on the 1841 census, I'll bide my time before ordering it.

I should say that is the 1841 census and the address is So Street (which seems to run right through that district as it keeps cropping up)

Looking at this census image on Ancestry.com the reference H0107, Piece 294, Book 4, Folio31, Page 2 @ So Street, the image is reaonably clear - it definitely looks like the enumerator has indicated Sarah a 71 year old femalem with Ann age and the 2 young girls Ellen and Ann.
What is a little disconcerting is that there is a baptism on December 21, 1770 for a Sarah Gale, daughter of William and Elizabeth Gale and the location was Toller Pocorum, Dorset.
Catharin's address in 1841 at the census reference I quoted was Alms Lane

Ah I hadn't spotted that the age was in the female column. Ah well back to square one I will have another look
