Hello; I'm looking for really any information on James Gooday. He was my 3rd Great Grandfather. It's my understanding he was born around 1803, in Cambridge,England. He had a wife named Sarah J. don't know her maiden name she was born about 1800. James Gooday immigrated to the USA arriving on June 22, 1852 aboard the ship Jonian in New York, New York. His wife Sarah and children arrived on August 25, 1853 aboard the ship: Hyhland Mary. James served in the Union Army from 1853-1856. Sarah died at age 77 in 1877 at Iowa city, Johnson county, Iowa, USA. James Died: December 30 1885 also in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, USA. I found that his family origin was Irish. After he immigrated he dropped the "A" in Gooday to reflect Goody. Thanks for any help you can provide.

What were the names of his children?
I've just spent some time looking a James and Sarah GOODAY in the 1851 census but so far have only come across this couple in the 1841 census - they have lots of children. I've no idea if this family is yours but here are their names and ages..
1841:Piece: 338; Book: 9; Folio: 6; Page: 6
Little Bromley, Essex
James Gooday 35, shepherd
Sarah Gooday 40
Henry Gooday 15
Fredrick Gooday 15
John Gooday 14
Elizabeth Gooday 12
Eliza Gooday 10
Edward Gooday 8
Robert Gooday 2
William Gooday 4 Mo
Only the three youngest children were born in the county.
If this is the wrong family, then once you give us the names of the children we can try and locate them in 1841/1851 the census. BTW: Do you know what James' occupation was?

From IGI familysearch- a James Gooday married a Sarah Manning on 20 JAN 1823 Chevington, Suffolk, just next door to Cambridge.
3 children were born there Frederic 1925,John 1827 & Sophia 1832.
I found a Frederick 15, same age with Parents James & Sarah in essex on 1841 census, no Sophia. 8 children -only the last 3 born in county of residence - Essex. Parents not born in Essex.
James a shepherd.
Other children.Henry 15, John 14, Elizabeth 12 ,Eliza10,Edward8, Robert 2 & William 4 mths.
Are they yours?

Nice one Wendy! This sort of matches with the family found in the 1841 census. Where are they in the 1851 census? Hrrmph!!
triumphguy, this looks like son Williams' birth in the index...
Birth Mar 1841 Tendring 12 259
GOODAY, William
If you order the birth certificate then it should give you Sarah's maiden name. Then you will know for sure if the marriage Wendy found is the correct one.

Waitabit; I suppose that Frederic , Henry and Sophia could have died prior to their parents relocating to the USA. Right?

They may have triumphguy, but we don't have access to deaths before 1837 Sept. unless they appear in some online Parish records.
I haven't found marriages either.Happy Families
