My Granddad was born in London in c1882 and was last known to be working as a Porter at a sanatorium in Brighton in 1901 to about 1909. He is only shown on the Census for 1901 as coming from London.
Any help to find what happened to him after leaving Brighton would be helpful.

I don't know who he married, as he is the skeleton in our closet. My Grandmother, Minnie Jessie Dewley became pregnant within a year after loosing her husband (John Dewley)in the sanatorium in Brighton. Harry Gage was a porter at this sanatorium at this time and as was a convention at the time, my mother was given the name "Gage" as her middle name. I am sure the Gage family are quite unaware of the existence of the child that he sired! My mother died many years ago and didn't know who her mother or father were, she was raised as a foster child with a family in Sussex.

Thank you for all that info. I had seen Harry Brasier Gage in the 1911 census but was not sure if he was the one. From the details that you have provided, it looks as if we have struck gold on this one. I have given the background of my family in the previous post to Jellylegs. The Male nurse info makes a lot of sense as he looks as if he went from Porter at the sanatorium in 1901 to become a trained nurse in subsequent years. If I can provide any other information please let me know.
Nice to see you are in almost the same time zone as me.

Ancestry has some First World War army records for a Harry 'Brasus' Gage [someone has corrected his middle name to Brasier]. There is also a medal roll index card for a Harry B. Gage, 45595 Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps: if you don't have an Ancestry subscription you could download this from the National Archives' "Documents Online" service for £2.00.
FreeBMD shows that the death of a 49 year old Harry B. Gage was registered in the Lewes district in the first quarter of 1933. You could send off for a copy of his death certificate (and the 1907 marriage certificate): let us know if you don't know how to do this.

That information is very valuable. I don't have a subscription to Ancestry but I will pursue it through the National Archives as you have suggested. I will get the details for the death and marriage certificates and send off for them at the GRO. I have already had a couple of certificates from GRO, so have an account with them.
I feel that I need to discover as much as possible about my maternal Grandfather. A few hours ago I was not very sure about where Harry Gage would take me. Again, many thanks for your help.
